Last night, our members gathered for our monthly training meeting, where the focus was CPR.

During the session, members completed certification in Adult, Child, and Infant CPR, as well as the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Maintaining these certifications ensures our members are prepared to provide lifesaving care whenever our community needs us.

Training never stops, and we're proud of the commitment our volunteers continue to make to serving the Cave Spring community.

We would like to thank Southwest Virginia Training for instructing our members valuable life saving skills.

Tomorrow morning, we wish Chris Harless the very best as he begins the next chapter of his fire service career by starting Roanoke Regional Fire-EMS Recruit School 42 with Roanoke County Fire & Rescue.

Over the past year, Chris has been a valued member of the Cave Spring Volunteer Fire Department. During his time with us, he earned his firefighter certifications, became a dependable member, and currently ranks among our Top 10 call runners for 2026.

Cave Spring has long been the starting place for many successful fire service careers, and Chris is another example of the dedication, experience, and passion that grows within our department before members continue on to serve their communities in full-time roles.

UPDATE

At approximately 2:25pm units from CSVFD and Roanoke County Fire & Rescue Department responded to reports of a structure fire and possible explosion in the 5100 block of Benois Rd. This business, a mill, specifically is a target hazard for first responders as it poses several unique hazards to responders.

Members from CSVFD responded and brought Ladder 103 fully staffed to the scene. Crews operated on scene for an extended period of time to ensure the fire was completely out.

This incident, while the fire was small, brought a number of resources from across Roanoke County as there were several safety hazards. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

DID YOU KNOW? Cave Spring’s Company and Rescue 3 is the busiest fire/rescue station in Roanoke County?

With speciality apparatus such as a Ladder Truck, Tanker, and Brush Truck, Company 3 is frequently called out of the Cave Spring area beyond normal 1st and 2nd due response areas to provide speciality equipment and personnel.

While the station is staffed 24/7 by Roanoke County Fire & Rescue personnel, volunteer crews provide supplemental staffing on weekends to place Ladder 3 in service, and responds on fires, entrapments, or other various serious calls during the week.

After 19 years of dedicated service, Assistant Chief John Zook is stepping into reserve status with the Cave Spring Volunteer Fire Department. A reserve member can still participate in the department operations, run calls, and assist in committees, however, does not have a duty requirement.

Chief Zook joined our department in 2007 with one simple goal, to give back to the community he calls home. Over the years, that desire to serve grew into an extraordinary legacy of leadership, mentorship, and selfless commitment.

Throughout his time in our family, Chief Zook has responded to countless emergencies, served in nearly every capacity within the department, and helped lead Cave Spring through some of its most challenging incidents.

Whether serving as a firefighter, Captain, or Assistant Chief, he has always been a steady, knowledgeable, and respected leader. His dedication to training, passion for the fire service, and willingness to share his knowledge have helped shape countless firefighters and officers who continue to carry those lessons forward today.

Beyond the emergency calls and leadership positions, Chief Zook helped build something even more meaningful, a family. He has always believed that the relationships formed at the firehouse last a lifetime, and he has played a tremendous role in creating the culture of camaraderie, professionalism, and service that defines Cave Spring Volunteer Fire Department.

While this marks the end of his time in an active leadership role, it is by no means the end of his impact. His influence will continue to be seen in the firefighters he mentored, the leaders he developed, and the department he helped strengthen over nearly two decades.

Chief Zook, thank you for your unwavering dedication to this department, the Cave Spring community, and the countless members who have had the privilege of serving alongside you. Your service, leadership, and friendship have left an immeasurable mark on our organization.
