🚒 Thank You, Coca-Cola! 🥤

The members of the Cave Spring Fire and Rescue Department would like to give a big THANK YOU to Coca-Cola and Richard Riggs for providing Powerade drinks for our firefighters!

Whether we’re training, working a fire, or responding to emergencies, staying hydrated is extremely important, especially during these hot Georgia days.

THE STORY OF CSFD ENGINE 17 CONTINUED

According to Fire Chief Lacey, the City of Cave Spring acquired Engine 17 sometime between 2014 and 2015. The apparatus was purchased from M3 Fire Apparatus LLC and refurbished to serve as a backup engine for the Cave Spring Fire Department.

During the process of bringing the truck back into working condition, members discovered a plaque on the inside of one of the doors that read,
D.C.F.D. ENGINE Co. No. 18

That discovery sparked curiosity among members of the department. After doing some research, they were able to make contact with a retired Lieutenant James Embrey, of the Washington, D.C. Fire Department.

Lt. Embrey was able to provide an incredible piece of history about the apparatus.
He advised that Engine 18 was among the fire companies called to assist the Arlington Fire Department at the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia, on September 11, 2001.
According to Engine 18’s company journal from that fateful day, Engine 18 was in service and responded to the Pentagon after American Airlines Flight 77 struck the building.

What began as the purchase of a used fire engine for a small Georgia community turned into the discovery of an incredible piece of American fire service history.

It serves as a connection to the firefighters who answered the call on one of the darkest days in our nation’s history.

We are honored to preserve that history and ensure that the story of DCFD Engine 18 now Cave Spring Engine 17 is never forgotten.

BEFORE IT WAS CSFD ENGINE 17.

Our Engine 17, was originally DCFD Engine 18. It was Engine Company 18 (E18) located at 414 8th Street SE, Washington, DC, on Capitol Hill / Barracks Row

By July 22, 2007, it had been reassigned as DCFD Reserve Engine 78 and was being stored in the DCFD warehouse property behind DCFD Engine 24 quarters.

The historical listing shows it as:
Engine 18--> Reserve Engine 78 --> Warehouse --> Sold to an unknown Fire Apparatus Vendor between 2008 – 2009 --> Purchased by the City of Cave Spring in either Late 2014 or Early years of 2015.

ENGINE 17: MORE THAN A FIRE TRUCK. IT'S A PIECE OF HISTORY.

You may have seen ENGINE 17 sitting in the bay at the Cave Spring Fire Department or traveling through our community.

Engine 17 Specs and History:
Make and Model: 1998 E-One Cyclone II Wagon (Job # 18177)

Pump Capacity: Carries 500 gallons of water with a 1500 GPM pump.

9/11 Service:
While operating as DCFD Engine 18, this apparatus responded as a mutual aid unit to the terrorist attack on the U.S. Pentagon on September 11, 2001.

Current Role:
Operates as Cave Spring Fire Department's 2nd due engine for fire response in the city and as a reserve engine.

But do you know its story?

As we approach the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, we want to share the history behind this apparatus and its connection to one of the darkest days in our nation's history.
Before Engine 17 called Cave Spring, Georgia home. It had already been part of a much larger story, including service associated with the emergency response following the attack on the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.

25 years later, this apparatus still represents something much greater than steel, hose, lights, and sirens.

It represents Service. Sacrifice. Brotherhood. Remembrance.

Over the next couple of days, we will share more of Engine 17's story, its connection to 9/11, and why we are honored to have this piece of fire service history here in Cave Spring.

We Will Never Forget.
