You are warmly invited to join us in honoring a remarkable moment in history—the 75th Anniversary of the Miracle of Gapyeong.

During the Korean War in April 1951, outnumbered United Nations forces—including the U.S. Army’s 213th Field Artillery Battalion (Triple Deuce)—helped hold the line in the Battle of Gapyeong, Korea, protecting Seoul and changing the course of the war. Their courage and sacrifice became known as the “Miracle of Gapyeong.”

This year, we also recognize the 100th anniversary of the Triple Deuce, their 20th year since deployment to Iraq, and reflect on our nation’s 250th anniversary, honoring a legacy of service across generations.

We are especially honored to celebrate Korean War veteran Frank Sweeting (age 94), who will be in attendance.

Gapyeong County is located in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. Based on the historic ties formed during the Battle of Gapyeong in the Korean War, it has established a sister city relationship with Cedar City. Since then, the two communities have continued to build meaningful exchanges and a lasting friendship.

Location: Veterans Memorial Park, Cedar City
Date: Saturday, May 2
Time: 10 am

The program will include veteran recognition, distinguished guest speakers, and a community gathering. A limited number of complimentary lunches will be provided by the Korean-American company Cupbop.

We invite all members of the community to come together in remembrance and gratitude for our veterans—especially our own Triple Deuce—and to celebrate the enduring friendship between Cedar City and Gapyeong.

The following photograph of the 16 NZ Field Regiment firing their Ordnance QF 25-pounder was found in a collection of photos by Rondo Farrar of Service Battery, 213th AFAB. Gun batteries of the 213th fought alongside the 16 NZ on 23-25 April 1951 during the Battle of Gapyeong. This photo is likely taken on 24 April near the city of Gapyeong where both the 16 NZ and the 213th were supporting the withdrawal of the 3RAR from Hill 504 and/or supporting the Canadians of 2PPCLI on Hill 677 to the north. 213th participant accounts note that they fired so much that they had to let the barrels of their guns cool off. The 213th command report notes 934 rounds of 105mm fired on this day.

Charlie Battery, 2-222nd Field Artillery, conducted a Change of Command ceremony as CPT Jensen relinquished command to CPT Bice.

CPT Jensen’s time in Cold Steel is a true example of dedication to the profession and to this unit. He began his career in Charlie Battery as a cannon crew member, serving in multiple gun line positions, earning Top Gun, and later commissioning as an officer. He returned to Cold Steel as a Fire Direction Officer and ultimately commanded the same battery he grew up in, spending 17 of his 18 years of service in Charlie Battery. His leadership, technical expertise, and commitment to Soldiers and Families built a disciplined, cohesive, and lethal formation. His legacy will remain in the standards he set and the leaders he developed.

We welcome CPT Bice to command and look forward to his leadership as Charlie Battery continues to uphold the standard and deliver timely and accurate fires. CPT Bice is a proven leader and will undoubtedly blaze his trail as a leader of those great unit.

Please join us in congratulating SFC Brett Christensen on his promotion to Sergeant First Class.
SFC Christensen will assume duties as the HHB Communications Chief, where his leadership, technical expertise, and commitment to Soldiers will continue to strengthen the battalion’s readiness. He never misses an opportunity to mentor others and consistently finds ways to support the mission. In his full-time role as the battalion’s maintenance technician, his skills are critical to sustaining our equipment and enabling operations across the formation. We are proud to have him in the Triple Deuce and look forward to his continued impact.

Serve the Guns Unshrinkingly.
