🌿 Magical critter alert!

At first glance, this appears to be a glob of spit on a plant. But if you clear away the frothy spittle, you will find a spittlebug nymph!

These insects feed on the xylem of the plant, which is high in water and low in nutrients. In order to get enough nutrients to sustain themselves, they drink over 100 times their body weight per day! As they feed, they secrete excess water and pump air into it to create the spittle-like coverage, which they use as camouflage and moisture retention.

🦦 Happy Mother's Day to all of the otter-ly amazing moms!

River otters are an example of some of the fiercest, dedicated mothers in nature. Female river otters can produce 5 to 8 litters in her lifetime. Each litter consists of one to four pups, and each of them are completely dependent on their mother for up to one year. During that year, momma otter teaches her babies to swim, hunt, socialize, and more... all by herself.

Today, we'd like to say thanks to all mothers, whether wild or not. πŸ’š

πŸͺΆ Sarah's favorite bird to see while birding is... a Barred Owl!

Sarah loves Barred Owls for various reasons, including their clear communication. They have a distinct 8-9 note call that is often described as sounding like "who cooks for you, who cooks for you all?" This famous call, used by both male and females, is used for many reasons, like general communication with partners, courtship, and to establish territory. Despite their loud calls, their lined plumage does an excellent job camouflaging them, making them a real treat to see!

Barred Owls can be spotted throughout woodlands, as well as in neighborhoods with trees. Even though they are primarily nocturnal, they can often be spotted and heard during the daytime (especially during mating season).

πŸͺΆ Megan's favorite bird to see while birding is... a Scarlet Tanager!

Megan likes Scarlet Tanagers because they are rather elusive! These birds are not year-round residents and can only be seen during the summer months in Iowa. However, they are not as easy to spot as other migratory birds because they spend most of their time high in the canopy, teasing birders with their rich songs.

You can see Scarlet Tanagers from early May to late August, flying high in the woodland!
