Help keep our city beautiful this summer with these lawn care tips from the Iowa Storm Water Education Partnership! 💚

🧪 Test your soil before fertilizing. Many Iowa soils already have adequate phosphorus and may need less fertilizer than you think.
🌿 Use phosphorus-free fertilizer and apply only at recommended rates.
🏷️ Reduce fertilizer and pesticide use. Try pulling weeds by hand, using mulch, and planting groundcovers. Integrated pest management can help alleviate ongoing pest issues.
🧹 Sweep any fertilizer or product residue off sidewalks and driveways back onto the lawn.
💧 Reduce or skip lawn irrigation. Established lawns are more resilient than most people realize.
🌱 Over time, consider replacing some turf grass with native plants suited to Iowa's climate. Native species have deeper root systems, need less water, and are better suited to surviving dry periods without irrigation.

The Cedar Falls Compost Facility, located in the 300 Block of East Main Street, will be closed to the public starting at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, June 26. It will reopen at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, June 29.

The closure is due to safety concerns because of increased traffic from the community events taking place throughout the weekend, including Sturgis Falls. Please call the City Public Works Department at (319) 273-8629 with any questions regarding the facility.

In observance of Independence Day, the below City facilities will be operating the following hours:

- City Hall: Closed Friday, July 3.
- Hearst Center for the Arts: Closed Friday, July 3, through Sunday, July 5.
- Cedar Falls Public Library and Community Center: Closed Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4.
- Cedar Falls Rec Center: Closed Saturday, July 4.
- The Falls Aquatic Center: OPEN Saturday, July 4.
- Cedar Falls Tourism: Closed Friday, July 3.

🗑️ Refuse Collection: Residents having Friday, July 3, as their collection day should put their garbage out by 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 2. There will be no large item collection on July 2. Large item collection will resume on Monday, July 6.

The Solid Waste Transfer Station and Recycling Center will be closed on Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4. Both facilities will reopen on Monday, July 6. If you have questions, please call the Public Works Department at (319) 273-8629 between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday-Friday.
