American Beavers are hard at work at Cedar Hill State Park! These ecosystem engineers create ponds by slowing streams with their dams, forming a moat to protect their "castle" from predators! These construction projects provide many benefits for both animals and people, creating bio-diverse water sources that can withstand drought and even reducing the risk of flooding!

Fun Facts: Beaver teeth are infused with iron, making them tough enough to chew through even the hardest wood. These chompers are also constantly growing, ensuring that they never get worn down. In fact, if a beaver did not keep its teeth short from constant chewing, they would grow to be 4 feet long in a single year!

Tarantula burrows are easy to spot, with a lining of silk to prevent collapse and detect nearby prey. Sleeping during the day, these arachnids will emerge under cover of night and patrol their territory in search of prey, such as cockroaches.

Every year, tarantulas and other spiders eat between 400 to 800 metric tons of insects- up to double the weight of all the meat and fish humans eat annually. That's the equivalent of 128 schoolbuses, or 8 Blue Whales!

Though their bite can be dangerous to humans without receiving antivenom, Black Widow spiders are usually very shy, making their webs in crevices inside or behind objects. Remember to stay safe this summer, and be careful not to put your hands in places you can't see!

Fun Fact: one of the top predators of Black Widows is the Blue Mud-Dauber wasp, which will catch as many Widows as they can to feed the young inside their mud nest!
