Countdown to the Hanover Township Day 350th Anniversary Celebration of Whippany
—————————————————————————

By the close of the 19th century, great numbers of immigrants from Eastern Europe fled to the United States because of economic unrest and many were attracted to Whippany by the promise of employment

In 1915, the Branch 43 of the Providence Association of Ukranian Catholics was founded with 12 members.

In 1921, a wooden structure was built to house the first Ukrainian Catholic Church.

By 1950, a new church hall was constructed, and the original wooden structure was moved over to serve as a kitchen.

In 1949, a new bell was donated by John Chayka to the church.

Today, the old structure stands on the cross section of Jefferson Rd and Route 10.

By the 21st century, the Ukrainian community had outgrown this structure, and constructed the Ukrainian American Cultural Center of New Jersey to accommodate Ukrainian studies school, youth groups, and dance ensembles.

Countdown to the Hanover Township Day 350th Anniversary Celebration of Whippany
—————————————————————————

We hope that you have been enjoying your summer.

Here’s a bit of trivia: Did you know that Cedar Knolls started off as a summer resort for NY families?

By 1916, there were 50 bungalows, 300
people staying in the summer, and 100 remaining as permanent residents.

Many of the lots were bought by immigrants from New York who would take the train to the Cedar
Knolls station (Cedar Knolls Rd and Boulevard) and hike up the hill to their lot.

Now some of us are lucky to live in CK year round 😝

Can you guess what the starting prices were for the original bungalows?
