As the holiday season quickly approaches, it is a time to reflect on the people, organizations and causes that make our community stronger and safer. It is also time for giving back to those who dedicate themselves to serving others and possibly end of year taxable donations. This holiday season, the Cedar Lake Police Department is asking our community to consider supporting a very special member of our department – K9 Johnny!
Johnny is a dual-purpose police K9 trained in patrol and narcotics detection. Working alongside his handler Officer Tomko, Johnny provides Cedar Lake police officers with an important additional resource during calls for service, investigations, searches and other law-enforcement operations. His specialized abilities can assist officers in locating narcotics, tracking and searching, locating evidence and helping officers safely resolve situations. Johnny is more than a police dog. He is a valued member of the Cedar Lake Police Department and a pattern to the officers who rely on his specialized training. His presence also provides an opportunity for positive interaction between our police department and the community, particularly during school visits, community events, demonstrations and public safety programs.
Maintaining a police K9 program requires an ongoing financial commitment. K9s require specialized food, veterinary care, medications, training, equipment, transportation, protective gear and other operational necessities. Johnny’s training is also continuous, with department records indicating that regular monthly training is necessary to maintain the skills and certifications required of a working police K9. While the department works diligently to maintain the K9 program, community support plays an important role in helping offset these ongoing costs. In fact, Cedar Lake has a history of generous community and organizational support for Johnny and the K9 program, including donations to help K9 Johnny and the Cedar Lake Police Department K9 Program.
Your donation will directly support K9 Johnny’s needs, ensuring he stays healthy, safe, trained and ready to serve alongside his handler and our other officers. No donation is too small. Whether it is $25, $50, $100, $500 or another amount, every contribution helps make a real difference and your generosity is seriously appreciated. Please consider making K9 Johnny part of your season of giving. When you support K9 Johnny, you are supporting more than a dog. You are supporting a working law-enforcement partner, the officers he services alongside, and the safety of the Cedar Lake community.
