Please join us in wishing our Administrative Assistant, Christina, a very happy birthday today!

Christina joined our department a couple of months ago, bringing previous experience in an administrative assistant role along with very close ties to the fire service. Her familiarity with the fire service and the unique needs of a fire department have made her a great addition to our team.

We’re happy to have Christina as a part of the Cedar Lake Fire Department, and hope she has a wonderful birthday.

We would like to congratulate the Hanover Central Wildcats varsity football team on their 28–10 victory over Michigan City to kick off the season!

You may have noticed our crews at yesterday’s game. At every Wildcat home football game, a Cedar Lake Fire Department ambulance and crew will be on standby to provide immediate medical assistance should an emergency occur.

We are proud to serve our community both on and off the field, including the students, staff, families, and athletes of Hanover Central High School.

Congratulations on a great start to the season, Wildcats! We look forward to cheering you on throughout the year!

As students across Hanover Community Schools head back to the classroom, the Cedar Lake Fire Department would like to wish all students, teachers, staff, and families a safe and successful school year!

With school back in session, please help us keep our kids safe by remembering a few important reminders:

🚌 Watch for school buses. Slow down when approaching a bus and never pass a school bus when its stop arm is extended and red lights are flashing.

🚸 Be alert in school zones. Reduce your speed, watch carefully for children crossing the street, and avoid distractions behind the wheel.

📵 Put the phone down. School traffic means more buses, pedestrians, bicycles, and vehicles on the road. A few seconds of distraction can make a significant difference.

🚗 Allow extra time. Expect increased traffic around schools during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal. Leaving a little earlier helps everyone get where they’re going safely.

👧 Talk with your children about safety. Remind them to use designated crosswalks, look both ways before crossing, stay out of the roadway while waiting for the bus, and never walk between parked vehicles.

🚒 Please watch for emergency vehicles. Increased school traffic can make emergency response more challenging. If you see lights and hear sirens, safely pull to the right and stop so emergency vehicles can pass.

Last night at approximately 11:14 p.m., the Cedar Lake Fire Department was dispatched to the area of Fulton St. and W. 129th Ln. for a reported residential structure fire.

ALS Engine 1211 and ALS Ambulance 1261 arrived on scene and found a single-family residence with fire showing from the Bravo-side exterior, extending into the soffits and roof.

Chief 1201 requested a Working Still Alarm, which was subsequently upgraded to a Box Alarm to bring additional personnel and resources to the scene.

Prior to the arrival of mutual aid companies, the crew of Engine 1211 initiated exterior fire suppression, completed a primary search of the residence, accessed the attic, and began interior fire suppression operations.

Crews encountered several challenges throughout the incident, including radio communication issues that have persisted since the recent storm. The front yard of the residence was also scattered with various debris, creating additional obstacles for crews accessing and operating around the structure.

During interior operations, firefighters discovered a previously existing roof beneath the current roof system, creating approximately eight feet of concealed void space between the two roof structures. This significantly complicated access to the fire and overhaul operations.

Despite these challenges, crews were able to contain the fire to the Bravo side of the structure and attic, limiting fire damage to the interior living areas of the residence.

No injuries were reported by the homeowner or emergency personnel operating at the scene.
