At last nights monthly Board of Safety meeting, PM/Captain Todd Konradi was officially promoted and sworn in as Battalion Chief. BC Konradi was accompanied by Fire Chief Mager, members of the department, and his family. BC Konradi had the honor of being “pinned” by his two children.

Battalion Chief Konradi will remain as the Shift Supervisor of B-shift, a role he assumed almost 2 years ago.
During that time, our department was also in need of an EMS Coordinator. Captain Todd Konradi stepped up and has filled that important role ever since.

We would like to congratulate Battalion Chief Konradi on this accomplishment, and we appreciate his service to the department and our community.

Earlier this week, several of our members joined members from the Lowell Indiana Fire Department and Hebron Volunteer Fire Department, as they continued their Driver/Operator series training. Training that afternoon was conducted in the Kingston Ridge area in Lowell.

Foundations Fridays.

Each Friday we’ll be highlighting a different foundation of the St. John Fire Department in an effort to help the public understand how our fire department works.

Today let’s talk about a firefighters schedule. Throughout the US there are many different schedules that fire departments have. Here at St. John Local 5136 our members work a 24/48 that means we work 24 hours and then have 48 hours off. This is considered to be a traditional fire department schedule That means we’re working in the middle of the night, on holidays, during family events, and when our kids have sports games.

It also means we average 56 hours a week and 2912 hours a year. When you compare that to a 40 hour a week employee who works 2080 hours a year that’s almost 900 hours more a year. Our overtime is also different. A 40 hour a week employee gets paid overtime after working 40 hours. On a 24/48 our members aren’t paid overtime until they work over 212 hours in a 28 day cycle. As you can see in the chart below over the course of 30 years that time adds up to working almost an extra 10 years more when compared to a 40 hour a week employee.

Some fire departments in NWI have been trialing different schedules like a 48/96 or a 1/3/2/3. These are being made in an effort to allow firefighters a chance to recover for longer periods of time. Some departments have even changed to a 24/72. So, when you see a department start to advocate for a schedule change now you understand why.

If you have any questions about our schedule or want to more about how our department works comment below!

Stay Safe St. John!

🚒May 2026 call stats and activity summary🚑

Closing out the end of May, our department has responded to a total of 1,077 calls for service YTD. This total reflects a 3.5% increase from the same time in Y2025.

We responded to a total of 229 calls for service in May broken down as follows:

🚑 EMS- 182 (Including 1 Field delivery of a healthy baby boy🍼👶).
🚒 Fire related incidents- 21
⚠️ Traffic Accidents- 19
🔥 Structure Fires (Town/Mutual Aid)- 7

📈 This total equates to an average of
over 7 calls per day for the month of May, and was a 13.9% increase in calls compared to May 2025.

Our average daily staffing of 4-5 full/part-time line personnel remains unchanged, and only allows us the capability to staff a combination of 2-ALS ambulances, or 1-ALS Ambulance/1-ALS Engine.

🚒📚 Training- Several members have been participating in the Driver Operator Series training, which should continue through the month of June.

🏫 We participated in several annual end of school year events with Red Cedars and Jane Ball Elementary Schools.
We appreciate the partnerships with our schools and them allowing us the opportunity to connect with the students and our community.

Union activities this month included several members participating in the Annual Indiana Professional Firefighters Bowling Tournament. This event was hosted by Portage Firefighters Local 3151.

Most recently, several members attended the 50th Annual Convention of the Professional Firefighters Union of Indiana. These members gathered with locals from around the state to conduct important business that impacts professional firefighters and paramedics throughout Indiana.

As always, keep an eye out for future community events and to see what your Cedar Lake Firefighters are up to each month!

We had a great time attending Field Day at Jane Ball Elementary School today!

Students took on an obstacle course along with various other activities and stations, stayed active, and cooled off by spraying water alongside our crews on a warm afternoon full of fun and excitement. Seeing the kids laugh, compete, occasionally soak our firefighters, and enjoy the day made it a memorable event for everyone involved.

We’re thankful to Jane Ball Elementary for inviting us to be part of such a great day and for the opportunity to connect with students, staff, and families in our community.

We hope everyone had an amazing Field Day and a safe finish to the school year!
