If you (or "Current Resident") recently received a letter saying, "someone at this address might not be registered to vote", that letter was NOT from our office -- but the voter registration form included with it IS valid.

The Center for Voter Information (a non-profit, non-partisan, non-governmental organization) recently sent voter registration forms to nearly 65,000 Iowa households. They are trying to reach people appearing on commercial mailing lists, but not at the same address on voter registration lists. However, the lists they use are sometimes out of date. To learn more about CVI and/or remove yourself from their mailing list visit: CenterForVoterInformation.org/got-mail

You may check your voter registration status on the Iowa Secretary of State's website via: apps.sos.iowa.gov/elections/VoterReg/RegToVote/search.aspx

If you DO need to update your voter registration, you may use the form and envelope provided with that letter or (if you have an Iowa Driver's License or Non-operator ID) update your registration online via:
MyMVD.IowaDOT.gov/Account/Login?ReturnUrl=%2fVoterRegistration

If you know other people in Linn County who need to register to vote or update their registration after a move or name change, and they can't or prefer not to register online, a blank form is available to print via: LinnCountyIowa.gov/DocumentCenter/View/3701/Iowa-Voter-Registration-Form-PDF

Iowa's Primary Election Day is now just one week away!

There is a Democratic Primary Election to select Democratic nominees for the November General Election and a Republican Primary Election to select Republican nominees. Each has a separate ballot. Each voter must specify which ballot they want to vote. If the ballot they select does not match the party affiliation currently on the voter's registration, their registration will be updated to reflect the party whose ballot they ask to vote.

See all the candidates countywide on page 2 of the handout at: Linncountyiowa.gov/DocumentCenter/View/16724/Whats-on-the-Ballot--PDF

The annual batch of "National Change of Address" (NCOA) cards are in the mail!
(For real this time; they were delayed beyond the originally anticipated mailing date by the end of April)

If you moved within the past year and submitted a change of address to the Post Office, but have not yet updated your voter registration, you can expect to see an NCOA card in your mailbox soon.

If you get one of these cards:
> Please check either the "Correct" or "Not Correct" box in the paragraph under the addresses (as fits your situation).
> IF the "New Address" listed is NOT correct, then cross it out and print your current residential address on the lines below.
> Either way, *SIGN* the postcard and mail it back (no postage needed).

About the NCOA program:

During the first quarter of each year, the NCOA process compares voters' addresses in the state Voter Registration database with change of address forms received by the U.S. Post Office.

Each voter whose address in the voter registration database does not match the new address the post office has on file will receive a notice asking them to confirm their address.

For the nearly 4500 voters whose reported move was WITHIN LINN COUNTY, the voter's address has been updated in the Voter Registration database, and a notice (as shown in the image associated with this post) was sent.

For the 2300 whose reported move was to a DIFFERENT county (or state) the voter's status has been changed to "Inactive" and a similar notice reflecting that situation was sent. Voters whose reported move was away from Linn County cannot be automatically re-registered at their new (out of county) address, since each county auditor's office can register people only within their own county. Those who moved out of county will NEED TO RE-REGISTER with the County Auditor of their new county (or with whomever does voter registration in their new home state).
What marking "Correct" then signing and returning this card will do is confirm that they have indeed moved to a different county or state, thus allowing the Linn County elections office to cancel their Linn County voter registration promptly. Without voter confirmation that they have indeed moved away, we are required to keep them on the rolls at their old address until they are due to be cancelled for inactivity after the next two General Elections (so in early 2029).

The Pre-Registration Deadline for Iowa's June 2 Primary Elections was yesterday (Monday, May 18 at 5 pm).

Any U.S. citizen resident of Iowa who will be 18 years old by the General Election on November 2 may still register and vote in the Primary Elections, but must:

* Provide proof of residence when they register (see list below)
and
* Register and Vote at the same time (either during In-Person Absentee "Early" Voting at the Auditor's Office or at the Election Day Precinct Polling Location for their address - see below for details.)

PROOFS OF RESIDENCE ACCEPTED

Must include name and current address and be current within 45 days; may be on paper or shown electronically (as a PDF):

* Iowa Driver's License or Non-operator ID
* Residential Lease (incl. letter from college Residence Life)
* Utility Bill, including a cell phone bill
* Bank Statement
* Paycheck
* Government Check
* Other Government Document (incl. vehicle registration)
* Property Tax Statement (current within 45 days of final payment date)

NOTE: VOTER ID is required as well, the same as for pre-registered voters. The primary voter ID in Iowa is an Iowa Driver's License or non-operator ID, if you have one.
