There is still time to get started on Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol, the social satire about a con man named Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov who travels across rural Russia to buy the rights to deceased serfs! Sharp and witty, this Russian classic is sure to be a great talking point on September 18. And even if you don't have time to read it, come along and enjoy the discussion with fresh coffee and cookies. All are welcome!

✍️ CEDARBURG WRITES 2026: YOUR STORY COULD BE A WINNER! ✍️

What does a hero look like to you?

A firefighter? A teacher? A parent? A friend? Someone who made a difference in your life? Or maybe a completely fictional hero you create yourself?

This year’s Cedarburg Writes Contest invites Ozaukee County writers of ALL ages to explore the theme HEROES through original fiction or nonfiction.

🏆 Prizes:
• $50 — High School & Adult winners
• $25 — Grades 3–5 & Grades 6–8 winners

Winning stories will also be featured in the News Graphic and on the Cedarburg Public Library website!

📝 Contest Rules:
• Open to all Ozaukee County residents
• Original fiction or nonfiction
• Must relate to the theme “Heroes”
• 1,000 words or less
• One entry per person
• Include your name, phone number, email, and age category

📅 DEADLINE: Sunday, September 20 at 11:59 PM
