Kulanu Announces Leadership Transition

Kulanu, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals with special needs and their families, today announced that Executive Director Dr. Beth Raskin will transition from her role after 26 years of visionary leadership. Effective July 1, 2026, Michael Appelbaum will assume the position of Executive Director. Dr. Raskin will continue supporting the organization in a new strategic role focused on organizational development, community outreach, and long-term initiatives.

Over more than two decades, Dr. Raskin has played an instrumental role in expanding Kulanu’s programs, strengthening community partnerships, and enhancing services. Her dedication has helped shape Kulanu into a trusted, innovative resource for families throughout the community.

“Serving as Executive Director has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career,” said Dr. Raskin. “It has been an honor to support the families at the heart of our mission. I am excited to continue contributing in this new role and confident that Michael will lead Kulanu with compassion, vision, and a deep commitment to our community.”

Michael Appelbaum brings over 18 years of experience serving individuals with developmental disabilities and nonprofit leadership. Most recently, he served as Managing Director of Operations at Yachad, where he successfully managed multiple programs across several states, led strategic initiatives, and strengthened operational infrastructure. His background positions him well to guide Kulanu into its next chapter.

“I am deeply honored to join Kulanu at such an exciting time,” said Appelbaum. “I look forward to building upon Dr. Raskin’s extraordinary legacy and working alongside our staff, board members, families, and community partners to further our mission and expand our impact.”

Kulanu’s Board of Directors expressed gratitude to Dr. Raskin for her decades of service and enthusiasm for the organization’s future. The transition reflects Kulanu’s ongoing commitment to growth, continuity, and excellence.

🌟Board Member Spotlight: Jeffrey Schoenfeld🌟

Meet Jeffrey Schoenfeld, a longtime Kulanu board member and former Board President, whose connection to Kulanu spans many years as both a parent and a leader.
Jeffrey first became involved with Kulanu after moving to the community and learning about the organization’s resources while raising a son with autism. Over time, his role grew, allowing him to see Kulanu from multiple perspectives and deepen his commitment to its mission.
Jeffrey believes Kulanu’s long history of service has helped shape an organization with deep expertise, flexibility, and heart. Its ability to think creatively, respond quickly, and meet individuals and families where they are has created meaningful impact not only for participants, but for the broader community as well.
As a board member, one of Jeffrey’s proudest moments has been witnessing Kulanu’s growth. Expanding services, reaching more people, and doing so successfully has reinforced his belief in the organization’s ability to truly change lives.
When speaking to supporters, Jeffrey emphasizes that Kulanu has made a significant difference for individuals with disabilities and their families and that continued support allows this important work to go on.
When asked to describe Kulanu in one word, Jeffrey said:
Family.
Thank you, Jeffrey, for being part of what makes Kulanu feel like family to so many. 💙
