As the 20 anniversary of 9/11 casts its shadow upon us, we'd like to take a moment to remember FF Kevin O'Rourke who was a member of the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department and a member of the elite Rescue 2 for the New York City Fire Department (FDNY).

Kevin was operating in the North Tower as it collapsed on that day with the rest of his brothers from FDNY Rescue 2. While ascending the stairs to respond to maydays for firemen trapped, and to fight a fire on the 83 floor, the tower collapsed trapping and ultimately killing the entire company working that day.

They put their lives on the line for people they didn't know. They ran in as everyone was running out. Because of their efforts many lives were saved that day and for that they paid with the ultimate sacrifice.

In Kevin's honor and memory the street in which our firehouse sits has since been renamed FF Kevin O'Rourke Way. #911

Today is Village of Lawrence Election Day (why we have so many different days to vote in Nassau County is another important discussion but for another time) It would be most appreciated if you can take 5 minutes to vote.

Polls are open until 9pm at the Lawrence Yacht & Country Club 101 Causeway

Supervisor Don Clavin and Town Clerk Kate Murray are inviting all Town of Hempstead residents to take advantage of “Passport Day in Hempstead Town” on Saturday, May 15th and Sunday, June 6th – two convenient weekend dates on which residents can safely and quickly apply for United States Passports. Hours for both dates are 9 AM to 4:45 PM.

“The COVID-19 pandemic placed enormous stress and hardship upon families across the Town of Hempstead, and spending a week or two away from home to relax and decompress is something that many of us desire,” said Supervisor Clavin. “We encourage all residents to take advantage of ‘Passport Day in Hempstead Town’ on May 15th or June 6th to take their first step back into the larger world.”

“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the Office of the Town Clerk has continued to provide essential programs and services to residents … from virtual marriage ceremonies to outdoor permit applications and even passport applications,” added Town Clerk Murray. “‘Passport Day in Hempstead Town’ is another way that America’s largest township is keeping government running in a safe and efficient manner. We invite all neighbors to join us at one of these convenient weekend events.”

All applications are by appointment only; appointments can be made by calling the Office of the Town Clerk at (516) 812-3100. Prior to coming to Town Hall for your passport appointment, residents should download the appropriate application at travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/how-apply/forms.html to familiarize themselves with information that will be required at the time of their appointment, such as proof of identity and citizenship. You may fill out the application in advance, but do not sign until instructed by a passport officer at your appointment. Visit hempsteadny.gov/passport-services/passport-fees for passport fees.

Last night I voted against the village budget and an estimated 16.7% hike in the Village tax rate. In the midst of a pandemic and economic crisis, I cannot justify that type of increase in the tax burden for our residents. Furthermore, the Village of Lawrence is in the process of realizing $8.5 million from the sale of the property on Rock Hall Road.

Raising taxes is not the answer.

We would like to thank the families of “the Beach Shul” synagogue which had the fire last week for dropping off some food and a thoughtful card this evening for our firefighters along with showing concern for the injured firefighters. Thankfully all LCFD firefighters are out of the hospital and recovering. We proudly serve the community no matter the cost. Your safety is our priority.

Severe weather coming our way

From a start time perspective, 3-5 PM tomorrow looks to be the best guess now. Doesn’t mean it won’t start after those times (5-7 PM), but that’s the range. It will start light and then pick up in intensity as the evening goes on. Late Wednesday and overnight, you really don’t want to be on the road. Sticking with our snowfall map for now, unless we see major changes during the afternoon. -Glen
