What happens after the call matters too.

One thing I’ve come to appreciate over the years is that the end of a call doesn’t always mean the end of its impact.

The patient has been transferred.

The report is complete.

The stretcher is cleaned.

The truck is back in service.

From the outside, everything looks normal.

But sometimes part of that call comes back with you.

Not every difficult call stays with us.

And not every call that stays with us looks difficult on paper.

That’s what makes it so hard to explain.

I’ve had conversations with providers who could work a chaotic trauma without missing a beat, yet weeks later found themselves thinking about a quiet conversation with a patient’s family.

Others couldn’t tell you why a particular call stuck with them.

It just did.

I’ve also learned that recovery looks different for everyone.

For some, it’s talking through the call before pulling out of the hospital.

For others, it’s a quiet drive home, a workout after shift, or simply getting a good night’s sleep.

And sometimes, it’s realizing days later that you’re still carrying something you thought you’d already put down.

That’s why checking in with each other matters.

Not because we expect everyone to struggle.

Because we don’t always know who is.

A simple, “How are you doing after that call?” can mean more than we realize.

So can sitting beside someone without trying to fix anything.

Sometimes people don’t need advice.

They just need to know someone noticed.

We spend a lot of time teaching providers how to care for patients.

I think we should spend just as much time teaching them how to care for each other after the call is over.

Because the human side of EMS doesn’t end when the ambulance doors close.

Dear Heavenly Father,
Be near to the first responder carrying the weight of a difficult call tonight.
When the images replay and the silence feels heavy, bring peace that settles deep in their soul.

Remind them that they were never meant to carry every burden alone.
Give them strength for what they witnessed, grace for what they could not change, and rest for a mind that won’t easily quiet down.

Protect their heart from becoming hardened, but also protect it from breaking under the weight of it all.
Surround them with people who understand, support, and remind them they are seen beyond the uniform.

And in the middle of the hard moments, let them still find light, hope, and healing.
