Drawing is often a child’s first introduction to the power and connections that symbols carry. For many kids, writing can sometimes be overwhelming; drawing can be relaxing, and even natural - think back to cave drawings!
If your child has a favorite book they like to read over and over, have them draw a scene from that story, and see how they interpret it.
If they are too young to draw their own, sit with them and have them describe you a scene to draw.
It can also help them comprehend new words when you can draw them. “Gigantic” can be somewhat abstract - but if you draw a gigantic tree next to a little apple, they can understand better.

Today's literacy tip to try with your children: make up a song about something you did this summer with your child. Singing is an excellent literacy skill, to show how different sounds can play within a word. Stretching out syllables, different musical notes, even mimicking a song they already know, can help them bring out the "play" part of daily speech we have talked about before.

For younger kiddos that can't make up their own lyrics yet, clap to the beat of a song, so they can learn syllables and timing; sing songs fast and slow, so they can have fun learning about tempo; use a rhythm stick, drum, or other makeshift instrument for them to play while you sing.

Today is National S'mores Day! Our literacy tip for the day involves math and counting. Ask your kids to count how many marshmallows the whole family uses when making s’mores.
Counting may seem like a super easy skill to learn, but by adding other tasks, you can build upon that foundational recitation. By using sequential counting, you can teach children that the last number spoken in a count represents the total quantity of the group. By separating it further into how many each family member used, you are teaching correspondence. Seems like a lot of learning going on for an ooey gooey afternoon!

Literacy tip for the day: play hide-and-seek with your child and their stuffed animal.

By using expressive language, you can expand children's conversational vocabulary and spatial grammar. Use describing words like "behind, under, or next to" to help them find where an item or person is hidden.
Playing hide-and-seek helps build emotional wellness through experiences of shared joy and opportunities for (mild) risk-taking.
For older kids, writing simple descriptive clues on paper slips instead of visual hiding spots, help early readers learn comprehension to decode written sentences to find the next location.
