Information for running as a write-in candidate:

1. Write-in candidates do not have their names on the ballot.
2. The election commission does not review the qualifications of write-in candidates, such as petitions, etc.
3. Poll officials cannot provide names of write-in candidates
4. Poll officials cannot help with spelling of write-in candidates
5. Poll officials can demonstrate on the machine how to vote for a write-in candidate with a false name, such as Mickey Mouse
6. The election commission will have an open meeting and determine acceptable spellings of write-in candidates' names
7. If there are state certifications that need to be issued for write-in candidates, that needs to be done before the deadline. Contact the election office for this information.
8. A write-in candidate certificate form must be filled out with the election commission to be counted on the ballot
9. A write-in candidate can withdraw no later than 5 days before the election
10. Write-in candidates must file a campaign finance report as other candidates are required
11. If no candidate qualified to be on the ballot and there are no other candidates who filed a certificate of write-in, then the single write-in candidate needs at least one (1) vote to win on a general election ballot
12. If no candidate qualified to be on the ballot, but another person timely filed a certificate of write-in for the same office, thereby having at least two people to have timely filed as write-in candidates, then the write-in candidate receiving the most votes will win on a general election ballot.
