On Friday, SMFR’s Medical Director, Dr. Jonathan Apfelbaum, presented six personnel from Chatfield State Park with Community Awards in recognition of their lifesaving efforts during a medical emergency that occurred earlier this summer.

On Saturday, July 11, 2026, a person was seriously injured by a boat propeller while recreating at Chatfield State Park. While crews from South Metro Fire Rescue (SMFR) were responding, multiple personnel from Colorado Parks and Wildlife arrived on scene and began patient care.

The patient suffered a traumatic lower-leg amputation and was transported to the hospital by paramedics, where they survived with no neurological deficits. Actions taken by Chatfield staff, including applying multiple tourniquets to control the hemorrhage, played an instrumental role in the patient's outcome and survival.

Thank you, Operations Manager Vinci, Rangers Miller and Clark, Seasonal Rangers Brown and Staley, and Seasonal Boat Assistant Sagar for demonstrating a servant’s heart and providing life-altering care during this emergency.

After a cat went running in a Centennial neighborhood last night, 50lb Barley only had one thing on his mind, to chase after! The quick escape and pursuit ended in a close to two-hour rescue effort which involved more than nine units, including the SMFR Technical Rescue Team.

This morning, South Metro Fire Rescue hosted state legislators and the Colorado Competitive Council for a demonstration at the Highlands Ranch Law Enforcement Training Facility.

The group watched a simulated cardiac arrest response and a Wildland demo featuring the Douglas County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) helicopter and wildfire hand crew. Attendees also learned about South Metro's Public Health and Prehospital Blood Programs.

Thank you to SMFR Board Vice Chair Renee Anderson, the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, and Douglas County OEM for helping organize and host this event.

On Saturday, members of SMFR’s Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) Team attended the annual Morgan Adams Air Show at Centennial Airport. To ensure safety throughout the event, Red 1 and Red 2, along with Medic 44 and Battalion 5, were on site during the air show. The demonstration included an Extra NG aircraft, a P-51 Mustang, and multiple aerobatic planes.

South Metro is honored to be involved in events like this and to serve our community. We are grateful for our strong working relationship with Centennial Airport, which allows us to respond with specialized ARFF trucks during aircraft incidents.

GET LOW & GO

At South Metro Fire Rescue Station 32, a simple reminder carries an important message for both firefighters and families at home: get low and go. A firefighter at Station 32 created this training reminder to reinforce something every firefighter knows when entering smoke-filled structures. The same guidance can help you during a fire in your home.
Smoke is toxic and rises, filling a room from the ceiling downward. If you need to escape through smoke, get low and go underneath it toward your nearest safe exit.

- ‎Once a smoke alarm sounds, you may have as little as two minutes to get outside safely. Working smoke alarms give you the early warning you need.
- Install smoke alarms in any room where someone sleeps, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of the home, including the basement.
- Make a home escape plan by mapping each level, showing all doors and windows, and identifying two ways out of every room. Practice the plan with everyone in your household, including visitors.
- Practice what to do if there is smoke: Get low and go. Get out fast. Go to your outside meeting place.
- If smoke is blocking your primary exit, use your secondary exit. If you still cannot get out, close the door, block the cracks to limit more smoke from entering the room with towels or bedding, call 9-1-1, and tell the emergency dispatcher exactly where you are.
- Teach children never to hide from firefighters. If they cannot safely get outside, they should go to a window, make themselves visible, and wait for firefighters to reach them. They can signal for help at the window with a flashlight or a light-colored cloth.

South Metro Fire Rescue is proud to share that we have again earned Accredited Agency status through the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI). This national recognition reflects our commitment to excellence and continuous improvement in the emergency services we provide to you and your community.

During the accreditation process, a Peer Assessment Team visited SMFR and spent time with our personnel. The assessors learned how our line and staff personnel collaborate each day, seeing firsthand how these groups coordinate to support field operations, maintain readiness, and deliver high‑quality service to our district citizens. Their feedback highlighted the strength of our service, our people, and our culture.

The Peer Assessment Team also identified areas for improvement, and many of the recommendations are already underway. SMFR is incorporating these improvements into daily operations with a focus on enhancing firefighter safety through a strengthened risk management approach, elevating the services that address community risk, and continuing to meet service levels with adaptability and innovation.

In 2025, SMFR responded to more than fifty thousand emergencies. The accreditation process helps ensure we continue to meet your needs with strong service delivery, innovation, and readiness. Severe storms that moved through the district on Saturday, August 15, kept South Metro Fire Rescue crews busy.

Between 2:30 and 4:00 p.m., SMFR responded to:

* 9 public assist calls involving stranded motorists at flooded intersections in Douglas and Arapahoe counties.
* 2 separate water rescue incidents at Chatfield State Park involving a total of four adults and a dog on paddleboards who needed assistance due to high winds.
* 1 single-family residence struck by lightning.

No injuries were reported in any of these incidents.

Severe Weather Safety:
When severe weather moves into the area, stay weather-aware and seek shelter when lightning or high winds are present. Never drive through a flooded intersection or roadway. Water can be deeper and moving faster than it appears, and it only takes a small amount of moving water to create a dangerous situation.

Turn Around, Don’t Drown. If you encounter standing or moving water on a roadway, find an alternate route.

SMFR and are actively responding to stranded motorists in Meridian Village at multiple flooded intersections. These conditions are dangerous and life-threatening.

Avoid all areas with standing water immediately. Never attempt to drive through flooded roadways under any circumstances. Turn around now and take an alternate route without delay.

Use extreme caution and give emergency crews the space they need to operate safely.
