New on CRR Academy: Advanced Program Design and Evaluation

If you have ever been asked "did your program actually work?" and wished you had a better answer, this course was built for you. Learn to design CRR programs using logic models, choose the right success measures, and defend your results with evidence instead of assumptions. Real program examples include inspections, community paramedicine, youth firesetting intervention, and firefighter injury prevention.

This is the first course in the new CRR Specialist Series, a seven-course curriculum that goes beyond the basics of Community Risk Reduction. More courses are on the way.

Know the rules where you live!

A fireworks stand is not a permission slip.
We get it. You see the tent. You see the fireworks. You think:
“Sweet. Must be legal.”
Not so fast.
Those fireworks may be perfectly legal to buy there… and completely illegal to set off where you live.
In Colorado, anything that leaves the ground or explodes is illegal for personal use.
That means no bottle rockets, firecrackers, Roman candles, mortars, or anything else trying to put on its own mini sky show.
And even fireworks that are allowed under state law may not be allowed everywhere. Some cities ban all personal fireworks. Other areas allow certain types.
Fireworks rules depend on where you light them- not where you buy them.
Before you load up the trunk:
✔️ Check the rules for your address
✔️ Know what’s allowed before you buy
✔️ Save yourself the “but I bought them legally…” conversation
Celebrate safely. Know before you light.

Honoring Our Fallen Heroes 🌲💔

Our hearts are heavy as Colorado mourns the devastating loss of three dedicated wildland firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice while battling the Knowles Fire.

We honor the bravery, dedication, and service of:

Emily Barker, 38 – U.S. Forest Service (USFS)

Nick Hutcherson, 27 – U.S. Forest Service (USFS)

Sydney Watson, 27 – U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS)

These individuals put their lives on the line to protect our communities, our lands, and each other. We are forever grateful for their courage. Our deepest condolences go out to their families, friends, and fellow crew members during this unimaginably difficult time.

Rest easy, heroes. 🧑‍🚒

This is not the announcement we wanted to make.

Due to extreme fire danger, critically dry vegetation, and multiple large wildfires burning across Colorado, all permitted Independence Day fireworks displays in Colorado Springs have been canceled.

This decision was made after careful evaluation by Mayor Yemi Mobolade, the Colorado Springs Fire Department, the Colorado Springs Police Department, and our public safety partners. Current fuel moisture levels in Colorado Springs are comparable to those recorded before the Waldo Canyon Fire, creating an extreme wildfire risk for our community.

We know this is disappointing, especially as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States and Colorado's 150th birthday. We share that disappointment. But protecting our community, our firefighters, and our first responders has to come first.

Our hope is to celebrate together when conditions are safe to do so.

Thank you to our community and to our partners, including Sports Corp, for understanding and supporting this decision. Your commitment to keeping Colorado Springs safe means everything.

CRRN’s June meeting is a wrap! Today, we gathered at Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection's Station No. 5 to talk all things CRR and get a first-hand look at one of the DFPC Home Fire Safety Simulator trailers. 🚒💨

With four of these trailers stationed across the state, they are true "force multipliers" for community fire safety education!
