May is National Stroke Awareness Month, dedicated to highlighting that an estimated 80% of strokes are preventable. Recognizing warning signs and taking rapid action—specifically by calling 911 immediately—is the critical difference between a full recovery and lifelong disability.

Spot the Signs: The B.E. F.A.S.T. Method Every second counts during a stroke, as millions of brain cells are lost when treatment is delayed. Use the B.E. F.A.S.T. acronym to spot the warning signs and know when to call emergency services:

• B - Balance: Sudden loss of balance, coordination, or difficulty walking.
• E - Eyes: Sudden changes in vision or loss of sight in one or both eyes.
• F - Face Drooping: One side of the face droops or is numb when smiling.
• A - Arm Weakness: Sudden weakness or numbness in one arm or leg, especially on one side of the body.
• S - Speech Difficulty: Slurred speech, trouble repeating simple phrases, or difficulty understanding speech.
• T - Time: If you observe any of these signs, it is time to call 911 immediately.

If you were driving on Rte 28 today in the area of Locke Lake you may have seen our apparatus pumping water.

Today Barnstead Fire Rescue was conducting annual pump testing. This process tests the capabilities of the pumps on our fire engines. A technician from Lakes Region Fire Apparatus conducts a series of tests over a prescribed period of time to evaluate the pumps performance. The annual pump test is a documented procedure to ensure the apparatus can perform at its rated capacity from draft.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the fallen and injured, as well as our brothers and sisters in Maine as they deal with the aftermath of this tragic incident.

In times like these, communities come together / neighbors helping neighbors, first responders answering the call, and families supporting one another through the unimaginable.

To all of our brother and sister firefighters, EMS personnel, law enforcement officers, mill employees, and the community we say; stay safe and know people across New England are praying for you tonight.

According to Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition:
- Home fire sprinklers only spray when the temperature in the room rises quickly.
- The sprinkler above the fire is the only one that sprays.
- Fire sprinklers and smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a fire by 82%.

From phones and laptops to electric snowblowers, cordless shovels, heated gear, and power tools. many of the devices we rely on this season use lithium-ion batteries. When they’re charged improperly (or with damaged cords), they can become a serious fire hazard.

Here’s how to keep your home and family safer this winter:
✅ Use the charger that came with the device (or one approved by the manufacturer)
✅ Inspect cords before you plug in—if it only works when you bend it “just right,” replace it
✅ Charge on a hard, non-flammable surface (not on beds, couches, or piles of gear)
✅ Keep chargers/batteries away from heat sources like space heaters and wood stoves
✅ Unplug when fully charged and don’t charge unattended or overnight when possible
✅ Store batteries properly like a cool, dry place, away from moisture and extreme cold
