The cadets at Center Line traveled to Grand Rapids this past weekend to compete in the High School State Firefighting Competition, SKILLS USA. While we performed exceptionally well, we fell just short of bringing home awards—but gained invaluable opportunities and experiences along the way.

During the trip, cadets had the chance to visit the historic Grand Rapids Fire Department headquarters, where they were met with outstanding hospitality that truly reflects the fire service. They were welcomed by the Fire Chief and even got to meet the department’s fire dog, “Smokey.”

Following the visit, our academy—along with students from Jackson Area Career Center—was invited to tour the City of Grand Rapids’ main training center, further expanding their learning experience.

We’re grateful for the warm welcome and generosity shown by GRFD and look forward to returning next year to continue building these relationships and learning opportunities. Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to invest in the future of the fire service.

It’s been a busy and rewarding stretch for our Cadets at Center Line. We kicked off the month focused on suppression, pushing through both classroom instruction and hands-on skill development.

As we wrap things up, the momentum is strong—now shifting our focus toward graduation and the next big milestone: State certification. Proud of the work being put in every day.

As the academy progresses, the Cadets at Center Line continue to build and refine the wide range of skills essential to the fire service. From venting roofs and mastering hose rolls to diving into hazmat response, each day brings new challenges and hands-on experience.

We are grateful to everyone who continues to support and guide us along the way—your time and dedication make a lasting impact

For their last practical Saturday, CLHS fire cadets trained on Firefighter Survival & RIT operations, reinforcing firefighter survival and courage to endure principles—self-survival, MAYDAY procedures, air management, and rescuing a downed firefighter. These are the skills that matter most when seconds count and conditions go bad. We are proud of the focus, discipline, and teamwork shown by every cadet as they continue building the mindset and skills to go home safe. We'd like to give a special shout out to the Center Line Department of Public Safety for the continued use of their station and resources.

It’s been a minute since we filled everyone in the happenings with our cadets at Center Line High School. As we finish the first semester we’ve practice our skills with ropes, ladders, search and rescue and VEIS. The semester was ended with a certification in Stop The Bleed. Training on major trauma intervention that will round out their skill sets for the semester. Stay tuned for next semester as we strive forward full speed.
