NATIONAL SAFE BOATING WEEK

As Memorial Day weekend and the summer boating season approach, the Center Moriches Fire Department reminds everyone that now is the perfect time to review important boating safety practices before heading out on the water.

Whether you’re fishing, cruising, kayaking, or spending the day at the beach, taking a few extra precautions can help keep you, your family, and others safe.

Before you go, remember to:

✔️ Wear a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket
✔️ Make sure your boat has all required safety equipment onboard
✔️ Check the weather and water conditions before leaving the dock
✔️ Let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return
✔️ Never operate a boat while under the influence of alcohol or drugs
✔️ Keep a charged phone or reliable communication device with you
✔️ Stay alert for other boaters, swimmers, and changing conditions on the water

The Center Moriches Fire Department Marine Division will be out on the waterways throughout the summer helping keep residents and visitors safe.

Be prepared before you go !

Just after 1:30 this afternoon, the Center Moriches Fire Department was activated for a motor vehicle accident with injuries on Montauk Highway at the bend by Kalers Pond.

While responding, firefighters were updated that one occupant was unresponsive and trapped in one of the vehicles.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a two-car head-on collision with multiple injuries. Crews quickly went to work using the “Jaws of Life” to remove the driver’s side door of one vehicle to gain access to the trapped occupant.

The trapped occupant was removed from the vehicle and transported by Suffolk County Police Aviation to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment.
