History and Synopsis of Three Hots and A Cot (Revised August 2016)

Three Hots and A Cot is a 501(c) (3) organization formed by veterans to help veterans. Changing one life at a time - Over one third of the homeless population is veterans. Our Initiative is not new - it is not that much different from what many organizations are doing across the country. Our Initiative is needed. There are homeles

s men and women on the streets of Alabama that served our nation. For various reasons these veterans of the Armed Services find themselves living on the streets, in abandoned houses, under bridges, in old warehouses, in city parks, and in the back of rental trucks. They are homeless. Three Hots and A Cot was founded by veterans - to serve our brothers and sisters who need our help. NOT a Homeless Shelter - but a gateway to Independence. Whatever the need of the veteran - we will help them meet it. Whatever the road block is - we will help them move it. Whatever the hurdle in the veteran's path - we will help them climb over it. Three Hots and A Cot's objective is to be a source of healing and prevention of a national tragedy. History - We obtained a six-bedroom home in the Woodlawn area of Birmingham in March of 2010. After extensive renovations of the Saint Benedict’s Veterans Center – we opened up for housing on June 15, 2010. Currently we have renovated the home to house eight veterans and one staff member. In October of 2010 we took ownership of a 15 bedroom – seven bath home in the Center Point area of Birmingham. We opened for housing at this location on December 18, 2010 and currently provide a home for 13 homeless veterans at this location plus housing for 4 formerly homeless veterans who now serve as part of the staff at Three Hots and A Cot. In September of 2011 we brought in our first female homeless veteran – and now offer co-ed housing as needed to serve all of our veterans. Our first shared/independent living facility opened in Woodlawn the end of August 2012 and is now home to three veterans in long term and more permanent housing. Our second shared living home – The Wayland House opened in January of 2013 and our first home for a family opened in March of 2013. Three Hots & A Cot currently operates nine houses – two transitional and seven independent living. Success Rate - Since we opened, we have had 934 veterans and family members in our program.
715– Have moved into independent housing, reconciled with families or moved on to other VA programs.
172– Were dropped from program – at their request or for failure to comply with our program requirements.
25– Residing at transitional homes.
22– Veterans and family members living in Independent homes operated by 3HAC
We have seen over an 82% success rate in our program thus far. Thank you for your consideration in supporting our initiative to help homeless veterans. JD Simpson

We got to meet with Senator and the Tommy Tuberville Foundation again yesterday. It is always a pleasure to talk with someone who truly cares about the right things, who loves this country, and who is willing to fight for it’s values. This man is so down to earth and personable. We thank him and his foundation for their generosity and for always being so genuine!

Update: The yard sale has been postponed until next weekend………

Our annual yard sale is an important part of our fundraising efforts. This year we want to have it from Thursday, September 21st to Saturday, September 23rd. We are short on items to offer and need more stuff.

Please consider donating and asking your friends and neighbors to donate your unwanted or unneeded items by Thursday of next week. Every dollar we raise helps continue our mission to be a gateway to homeless veterans seeking their independence.

Thank you for your support!

Hey friends, we are in need of a reputable plumber to do some work at our St. Benedict’s Veterans Center right now. We have called several plumbers in the area for estimates and can’t seem to get any of them to come out. It is a big job. Part of the yard and street will have to be dug up. So it has to be a plumber that really knows what they’re doing and has the proper equipment. We are open to any help or recommendations in this matter. Thanks in advance.
