The Upper Saucon Fire Department was honored to participate in the 12th Annual Upper Saucon Memorial Day Gold Star Service yesterday, paying tribute to the family of Derek Holland from Pen Argyl, who sacrificed his life in service to our country. Derek's life was tragically cut short on June 3, 2008, when his vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb near Zormat, Afghanistan. At just 20 years old, his sacrifice will never be forgotten. We remember Derek and all other veterans who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our nation and its people.

Derek Holland graduated from Pen Argyl High School in 2006. During his senior year of high school, Derek made a decision that would define his life when he enlisted in the Pennsylvania National Guard because he wanted to serve his country and be part of something bigger than himself.

On June 3, 2008, Derek was killed when a roadside bomb struck his vehicle near the town of Zormat, Afghanistan. He was only 20 years old.

We hope you will join us on Memorial Day as we HONOR and REMEMBER his sacrifice to our country.
