NASHVILLE – Beginning October 15, a free burn permit from the Tennessee Department of Agriculture Division of Forestry (TDF) is required prior to burning leaves or natural vegetation, including debris generated by Hurricane Helene.

“Due to the vast amount of woody debris from Hurricane Helene and other recent storms across the state, we expect more outdoor burning than usual this year,” State Forester Heather Slayton said. “Since escaped debris burns are the leading cause of wildfires, it is important that Tennesseans take fire safety seriously. Burn permits are required by law and the tool by which we help citizens understand when and how to burn.”

As dangerously cold weather makes its way into , the Centertown Fire Department would like to remind you of a few things to help keep you safe during the next few days. Be extremely careful with space heaters, heat lamps, candles, open flames, and other heat sources. We also ask that you remember those who are particularly vulnerable to the ill effects of bitterly cold weather like children, the elderly, pets, and other animals.

Remember a few safety tips during this time:
* Install a carbon monoxide detector.
* NEVER run generators indoors.
* Open a window slightly when using a kerosene heater and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
* NEVER use a gas oven to heat your home.
* If your heat goes out, you can keep warm indoors by closing off rooms you do not need, dressing in layers of lightweight clothing, and wearing a cap.
* Do not use extension cords with space heaters.

For wood-burning stoves, fireplaces and heaters:
* Always keep a screen around an open flame.
* NEVER use gasoline to start your fireplace.
* NEVER burn charcoal indoors.
* Do not close the damper when ashes are hot.
* Use only safe sources of alternative heat such as a fireplace, small well-vented wood or coal stove or portable space heaters. Always follow manufacturer’s instructions.

Remember to bring pets inside, provide shelter and fresh water, keep salt away from paws and avoid cloth blankets & items which trap moisture and can freeze.

Personnel & equipment from the Centertown Fire Department have deployed to assist with the ongoing fire situation on Harrison Ferry Mountain. A group of firefighters & officers also remain available to respond to calls as usual within our jurisdiction and surrounding areas, as needed. We are working to provide mutual aid and to work together with other agencies to ensure countywide emergency response needs remain met.

We remind everyone that the fire situation in Warren County remains volatile. Burning is subject to permits issued by the State of Tennessee and utmost caution should be exercised when burning is allowed. For more information, visit BurnSafeTN.org
