Centerville-Washington Park District

Centerville-Washington Park District Over 1,060 acres have been preserved at 51 parks. Explore your community's BIG backyard! Visit all 51 of your parks!

Founded in 1959, the Centerville-Washington Park District's mission is to deliver fun, healthy, and outstanding park experiences that connect the community with the outdoors. The Centerville-Washington Park District was created in 1959 by local residents with the foresight to realize that areas must be set aside as parks, while the community was developed with homes and businesses. The majority of

funding for the Park District comes from a levy voted on by the residents of Centerville and Washington Township. The Centerville-Washington Park District's mission is to deliver fun, healthy, and outstanding park experiences that connect the community to the outdoors.

It all started with a drawing of a playground.

When Eli designed a playground for the park closest to his home, he asked his parents to send his ideas to us for consideration. While that particular park isn't scheduled for a new playground anytime soon, Activity Center Park is! We couldn't pass up the opportunity to meet such an enthusiastic young park planner!

Last week, Eli and his dad joined us for a visit to talk all things playgrounds. He shared his creative ideas, explored different playground features, learned about playground safety inspections and even left with a BIG book of playground equipment to inspire future designs.

We love seeing community involvement from our youngest residents, and Eli's passion for parks made our day. There are a lot of great days at CWPD, but this was one we'll remember!

Thanks for sharing your ideas with us, Eli! We hope to see you again when plans for the new Activity Center Park playground are ready.

The first week of June is National CPR & AED Awareness Week.

When cardiac arrest happens, the first chance for survival often comes from people nearby. Every additional person who knows these lifesaving skills can make a difference!

At CWPD, all staff (and some volunteers!) are First Aid and CPR certified. Some members of our team refreshed their training today, practicing skills that could one day help save a life.

TIP: You can use the PulsePoint app to track public AED locations. Then, lifesaving devices can be found fast when seconds count! AEDs are located at Activity Center, Bill Yeck, Forest Field, Grant, Iron Horse, Oak Creek South, Oak Grove, Robert F. Mays, Schoolhouse and Yankee Parks.

Within several CWPD parks, exploring your BIG backyard can be just the start of taking a journey to endless destinations through your Little Free Libraries. Based on the work of Little Free Library, a nonprofit organization located in St. Paul, Minnesota, these stand-alone book-exchange boxes are designed to build community and inspire readers by expanding access to books.

Within the Centerville-Washington Park District, park goers can find six Little Free Libraries – located in Forest Field, Iron Horse, Pleasant Hill, Robert F. Mays, Schoolhouse, and Yankee Parks. Most of these libraries in the parks are located near playgrounds, encouraging early literacy opportunities among families. CWPD also works to bring literacy into its programming through an ongoing partnership with the Washington-Centerville Public Library and the free “Nature Fun: An Outdoor Family Storytime” series.

The next Nature Fun Storytime event will be held tomorrow, Friday, May 29 at the Kennard Nature Nook in Grant Park before returning for its summer series on Fridays, June 26, July 17, and August 4 at the Schoolhouse Park Shelter.
