PUBLIC RELEASE FROM CHIEF ROGER CORCORAN
Re: May 19, 2026, Traffic Crash Involving Mayor Wade Evans
As many of you have heard, Mayor Wade Evans was involved in a two-vehicle traffic crash that occurred at approximately 8:00 p.m. on May 19th, at the intersection of Blackwater Road and Hooper Road. The Central Police Department has completed its investigation and is releasing the following information in the interest of transparency.
Mayor Evans was traveling southbound on Blackwater Road after leaving a public event and was stopped at the traffic light on Blackwater Rd which displayed a red traffic signal. The traffic signal for Blackwater turned to GREEN at which time the Mayor who was operating a city-owned Ford F-150 proceeded into the intersection in the attempt to turn east on Hooper Rd. At the same time, the driver of a Nissan Altima was traveling westbound on Hooper Road approaching the intersection of Blackwater Road.
Investigators determined that the driver of the Nissan Altima either failed to notice or disregarded the red traffic signal controlling westbound traffic on Hooper Road. The Altima entered the intersection without braking and collided with Mayor Evans’ vehicle, causing significant damage to both vehicles.
Mayor Evans, his passenger, and the driver of the Nissan Altima were all transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
While receiving treatment, Mayor Evans voluntarily requested toxicology testing. The results of that testing, which are attached to this post, showed no signs of intoxication or impairment.
The crash was also captured on video by a nearby homeowner. That video, which is attached to this post, is consistent with the findings of the investigation described above.
The Central Police Department has determined that the driver of the Nissan Altima was at fault in this crash, and the investigation is now considered closed.

The following statement was provided by Mayor Evans regarding the incident:
“I want to address the false and salacious allegations that have circulated following this tragic accident.
The facts are clear. Toxicology reports confirmed that my system was free from any substances, and video evidence shows the other driver never applied their brakes prior to the collision. This accident was the result of a driver running a red light — a heartbreaking event that has caused pain for multiple families and our community as a whole.
What has been especially disappointing is seeing certain individuals use this tragedy to spread misinformation, create division, and stir confusion instead of offering prayers, compassion, or support. In difficult moments, we should strive to uplift one another rather than deepen the hurt with reckless accusations and bitterness.
I want to sincerely thank the first responders, the staff at Lane Hospital, and the many people who reached out with genuine concern, prayers, and encouragement. Your kindness and support during this difficult time have meant a great deal to me and my family.”
