May 3, 2005- a day that the our members and the members of the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance will never forget.
One of our own volunteers, Honorary Chief Paramedic William “Bill” Stone, and Riverhead volunteer, EMT Heidi Behr, both succumbed to their injuries while transporting a patient out east. Their ambulance was involved in a fatal accident when the driver lose control and collided with a tree. Both the driver and patient survived.
21 years later, we still remember both Bill Stone and Heidi Behr. The Central Islip Hauppauge Volunteer Ambulance Corps still offers a scholarship in Bill Stones name to keep his legacy alive. This scholarship is awarded to an EMT who is planning on attending paramedic school so they can learn and treat patients as Bill once did.
We pay tribute each month of May to their sacrifice, and honor their memory, recognizing the exceptional dedication and bravery they exhibited to serve their community. Their legacy continues to inspire us and we are forever grateful for their time spent with us.
Please keep both William Stone and Heidi Behr in your thoughts and their families in your prayers this month.
