Disabled Resources Center, Inc. Incorporated in 1976, the Disabled Resources Center was founded by Jerry Stein, Lee Tardy, and Warren Moss.

The mission of the agency is, “To empower people with disabilities to live independently in the community To Make decisions about their lives and to Advocate on their own behalf. Guided by the vision and dedication of the founders, the services offered by DRC evolved from giving information and referrals, to providing eighteen services to thousands of people each year in the cities of Artesia, Ava

lon, Cypress, Hawaiian Gardens, Lakewood, La Palma, Long Beach, Seal Beach, and Signal Hill: plus 52 ZIP Codes in the City of Long Beach, Los Angeles County and Orange County, California. Most of the staff members are people with disabilities, as are the members of the Board of Directors, who provide positive role models for other people with disabilities. 📢 Important Medi-Cal & CalFresh Updates

Several changes are coming that may affect people receiving Medi-Cal and CalFresh:

• Medi-Cal: Changes for some Qualified Non-Citizens begin October 1, 2026.
• Free webinars: Learn about Medi-Cal and CalFresh changes in multiple languages.
• CalFresh work requirements: L.A. County’s new Workforce Community Service Hub can help connect eligible individuals with community service opportunities.
• Market Match: CalFresh recipients can receive matching funds for fresh fruits and vegetables at participating farmers markets.

Every year from September 15 through October 15, National Hispanic Heritage Month recognizes the rich histories, cultures, traditions, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities in the United States. It is an opportunity to honor the diverse experiences of people with roots in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.

The celebration began in 1968, when President Lyndon B. Johnson established Hispanic Heritage Week. Twenty years later, President Ronald Reagan expanded the observance to a full 30 days. Congress officially established the month-long celebration as law on August 17, 1988.

The September 15 start date is especially meaningful. It marks the anniversaries of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates its independence on September 16, while Chile observes its independence on September 18. The month also includes October 12, recognized in different countries and communities as Columbus Day or Día de la Raza.

At the Disabled Resources Center, we recognize Hispanic Heritage Month as an opportunity to celebrate the diversity, resilience, leadership, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino people—including people with disabilities—who continue to strengthen our communities.

The Port of Long Beach is conducting an ADA Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan focused on curb ramps and sidewalks, and they want to hear from the community about accessibility barriers in the right of way.

If you have experienced barriers while navigating the Port of Long Beach, this is an opportunity to share your feedback and help identify areas that need improvement.

Community members can also attend a virtual public hearing on Monday, August 31, from 6:00–8:00 PM to learn more about the ADA Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan.
