A Message from Sheriff Jeff Shaver

During National Police Week 2026, we pause to honor the brave men and women in law enforcement who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities. We also recognize the deputies, officers, dispatchers, correctional staff, and support personnel who continue to serve with courage and professionalism each day.

“Law enforcement is more than a career. It is a calling built on sacrifice, long hours, missed holidays, difficult moments, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others. This week is a reminder to reflect on the heroes we have lost and to thank those who continue to wear the badge with honor,” Sheriff Shaver said.

To the men and women of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and agencies across this nation, thank you for your service, dedication, and sacrifice. Your work does not go unnoticed, and we are grateful for all you do to keep our communities safe.

We’re proud to spotlight Chief Deputy Josh Summerford and the leadership he provides to our office.

Chief Deputy Summerford was appointed to the position in 2018 by Sheriff Jeff Shaver. As Chief Deputy, he serves as the assistant sheriff and oversees the daily operations of the Sheriff’s Office, including Administration, Patrol, Investigations, the Detention Center, School Resource Officers, and Court Security.

Chief Deputy Summerford brings more than 25 years of law enforcement experience to the role. His career began with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, and he later served as an investigator and Chief Investigator for the District Attorney’s Office for Cherokee and DeKalb Counties. He has been at the Sheriff’s Office for over 12 years and became the Chief Investigator in 2015 before being appointed Chief Deputy.

From 2015 to 2025, Chief Deputy Summerford also served as Director of the Cherokee County Major Crimes Unit. During that time, the unit maintained a 100 percent solve and conviction rate on murder cases.

He is a graduate of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Academy, the Alabama Public Safety Leadership Academy, the United States Department of Homeland Security Leadership Academy, and the 279th Session of the FBI National Academy, becoming the first member of our office to attend the National Academy. Chief Summerford also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbia Southern University.

In addition to his leadership role, Chief Deputy Summerford has helped secure more than $1 million in grant funding to support public safety efforts in Cherokee County. Chief Deputy Summerford is married to Cherokee County District Attorney Summer McWhorter Summerford.

Today at the Cherokee County Commission meeting, Sheriff Jeff Shaver and Chief Deputy Josh Summerford presented four members of the Sheriff’s Office with Life Saving Awards for their actions in three separate incidents.

Deputy Catly Itson was recognized for helping remove a man from a burning vehicle on Interstate 65 following a multi vehicle collision while she was attending the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Academy.

Sergeant Daniel Holcomb (not pictured) and Sergeant Jonah Smith were recognized for providing life saving measures to a woman following a su***de attempt.

Investigator Seth Rochester was recognized for responding to a call involving a person suffering a medical emergency. Upon arriving on scene, he immediately began CPR and continued providing care until emergency medical personnel arrived and took over.

As we observe National Police Week, this recognition is a reminder of the dedication, compassion, and willingness of our deputies to step in and help others when they are needed most.

We are proud of our deputies for their actions and for the way they serve our community.

Last night, we celebrated the families and spouses who support us everyday. Their sacrifice, patience, and unwavering support make it possible for us to serve our community. We are grateful not only for our employees, but for the families who stand beside them through the long hours, missed holidays, and difficult days. Everyone had a great time and about 90 people were in attendance.

Today, we celebrate the mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, and mother figures who love us, sacrifice daily, and hold families together through every season of life.

We are especially thankful for the moms who serve our community while balancing the important role of raising and supporting their families. Your strength, compassion, and dedication do not go unnoticed.

Please join us in congratulating Sgt. Mike Farrell on being recognized this week as the SEFTOA FTO (Field Training Officer) of the Year at the South Eastern Field Training Officers Association (SEFTOA) Conference in Gulf Shores, where he was joined by Chief Deputy Josh Summerford.

This award reflects Sgt. Farrell’s leadership, dedication, and commitment to training and mentoring law enforcement officers.

Sheriff Jeff Shaver stated, “Sgt. Farrell has always led by example and takes great pride in helping develop young officers. He cares about the people he trains and the job they do, and this recognition is well deserved.”

Chief Deputy Josh Summerford added, “Mike is the kind of supervisor and trainer who invests in others and wants to see them succeed. He represents our office well, and we’re proud to see him recognized for the impact he continues to make in law enforcement training.”

Today, personnel with our Office welcomed Governor Kay Ivey to Centre and assisted with security during her visit.

The dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony for the Mary George Waite Community Center was held during her visit.

The event honored the life and legacy of Mary George Waite, whose impact on Cherokee County and the State of Alabama continues to be remembered through her years of leadership and service.

We were honored to assist Governor Ivey during her visit and proud to be part of such a meaningful occasion for our community.
