SCAM ALERT: Maryland Judiciary warns of text scams about traffic violations at the District Court of Maryland
The Maryland Judiciary is warning the public about a variety of text scams that appear to reference a judge’s name, clerk’s name, and a law enforcement officer’s name, and directs recipients to report to the District Court of Maryland for a show cause court hearing on Friday, August 7, 2026, at 10 a.m., or face penalties. The current scam directs people to report to the District Court of Maryland, but it does not mention a specific courthouse location.

These texts, or any variations of it, are a scam, and recipients should not click the links, scan QR codes, nor provide any payment or personal information. Maryland courts do not send texts requesting payment or personal information via text, telephone, or email.

Members of the general public who have questions about potential scams like this can contact the Office of the Attorney General Consumer Protection Division hotline at 410-528-8662 or toll free 888-743-0023.

Additionally, scams and suspicious communications may also be reported to the Federal Trade Commission.

For any questions about a court-related item, please contact the District Court or circuit court in the local jurisdiction. Contact information for each court is available on the Maryland Judiciary’s website under “Directory of Courts.”

Phone Scam Alert - Circuit Court "Fines"

Please be aware of an ongoing phone scam involving callers using a 667 area code phone number, falsely claiming to be a "representative" from the Queen Anne's County Circuit Court.

Scammers are telling victims that they or a loved one missed a court appearance, owe fines, and must make immediate payment to avoid arrest or having a warrant issued.

Remember:
• The Circuit Court and law enforcement agencies will NEVER demand immediate payment over the phone.
• Legitimate court matters are handled through official written notices and proper legal procedures.
• Do not provide personal information, banking information, gift card numbers, or electronic payments to unsolicited callers.
• Do not stay on the line with threatening callers.

If you receive one of these calls:
✔ Hang up immediately
✔ Do not send money
✔ Report the incident to your local law enforcement agency

Residents are encouraged to warn family members, especially elderly relatives, who are often targeted in these scams.

Stay alert and help protect our community by sharing this information.
