Even though EMTs/Paramedics are EMS 24/7/365, this week marks the 50th anniversary of EMS week. As first responders, they are often thrust into the midst of chaos and difficult situations. They experience first-hand things that haunt their memories and their dreams. They do so with a lack of sleep, food, and financial security. They have good days and bad days. People assume they manage without being phased but that's like telling someone they can walk through water and not get wet. They are human and do a job that most admit they could never do. The general public doesn't realize the strenuous nature of the job and the toll it takes on the physical body and health, mental health, or home life of EMS workers. If you see an EMS member out in public, realize that they suffer sleep deprivation from 24+ hour shifts, time away from their families, missed holidays, a higher propensity to develop depression, anxiety, multiple health issues/diseases, as well as the wear and tear of their bodies. But they get up and go to work, and do what is necessary for their community. They understand that someone has to do it, and they do so when they are called. Amserv EMS would like to say Thank You to the men and women who serve the Bibb County Community, both to our dedicated employees and also the other agencies who work alongside us to help us help Bibb County. Please thank your favorite EMS worker when you see them out, your appreciation makes it all worth while!
