The Huntington Regional Highway Safety Program and West Virginia law enforcement are calling on drivers to recognize speeding as an aggressive driving behavior that endangers all road users and to help put an end to it by slowing down themselves. This high-visibility campaign runs July 6th through July 31st. Local law enforcement will be patrolling and monitoring speed on all roadways within the region.
Every year, thousands of people are injured or killed in speeding-related crashes across America. In 2024, there were 11,288 fatalities involving speeding, accounting for 29% of that year’s traffic fatalities. While that number represented a 5% drop from 2023, speeders don’t just put themselves at risk—they also endanger passengers, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
Speeding-related fatalities affect communities nationwide every year. Young drivers have a higher chance of being involved in speeding-related crashes. In 2024, 39% of male drivers and 20% of female drivers in the 15- to 20-year-old age group involved in fatal traffic crashes were speeding.
Speeding endangers not only the life of the speeder, but all of the people on the road around them. It is a problem that we all can provide a solution for. Simply slow down and pay attention when driving.
