We had SUCH a blast at Voices of Brandywine at the beginning of this month!

Guests saw two different shows put on by the .

"Across the Line" featured Jamison Foreman as General George Washington, Tom Geiger as Captain Enoch Anderson, and Sam Nagel as Hessian Captain Johann Ewald. This show demonstrated how men on either side of the battle navigated the tough decisions needed to perform on the battlefield.

"The Cost of Brandywine" featured Tom Geiger Joseph Townsend, Giavanna Mariano as Mary "Polly" Frazer, Sam Nagel as Dr. Benjamin Rush. This performance reiterated the cost that local civilians were forced to pay during and after the Battle of Brandywine. Not only were they left to rebuild their homes and communities, but to build a new nation.

"The year is 1778. George Washington and his
Continental Army recently suffered a humbling defeat
at the Battle of the Brandywine. The war against
England has been raging for three years with few
victories to give Americans confidence they will prevail.
One local citizen who had fought alongside
Washington’s troops has changed sides, supporting the
British, plundering local farms and bringing his wrath
upon anyone who supports the Patriot cause. Large
and muscular, he has become a highwayman, brutally
robbing people at gunpoint wherever he finds them
around southern Chester County. Known as ‘Captain
Fitch’ to some, James Fitzpatrick’s exploits terrorized
the area and his actions became legendary, described
in a fascinating new book “Sandy Flash and the Trail of
History."

Tickets are required and will be available at the entrance. Please note that parking is first-come, first-served. And that some walking will be required.

See actors bring to life the Battle of Brandywine like never before. Meet Phillis Wheatley, Anthony Wayne, and soldiers from both the Chester County Militia and the 1st Continental Regiment. Houses are available as a open house with docents.

Born in West Africa in about 1753, Phillis Wheatley was kidnapped and taken aboard a slave ship to Boston in 1761. Because of her frailty, she was purchased for a “trifle” as a domestic slave for Susanna Wheatley. Phillis was named for the ship that brought her to Boston, and after her enslavers. John Wheatley was a prominent Boston tailor. Phillis did not speak English when she arrived in the colonies, so she was tutored by the Wheatleys’ daughter, Mary, and received the same education that a girl of the white elite might have had. She learned reading, writing, religion, language, literature, and history.

It is believed that Phillis’s first published poem was “On Messrs. Hussey and Coffin,” which was published on December 21, 1767 in the Newport, Rhode Island, Mercury. Her fame quickly spread across the Atlantic. At 18 years old, Phillis had a collection of twenty-eight poems that she and Mrs. Wheatley advertised for publishing in the Boston papers. Despite being a household name at a young age, many colonists refused to sponsor an African writer. Phillis sought support in London, and her book “Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral” was published in 1773.

Phillis was manumitted around the time her book was published. She married a free Black man, John Peters, in 1778. She is considered the first African-American author, and the second woman, of a published book of poetry.

UPDATE: NEW SHOWTIME ANNOUNCED!
Come learn about the largest single-day land battle of the American Revolution in a way you have never seen it before! On August 1st, you will learn about the decisions that men on both sides were forced to make for their cause of unity or independence. You will also learn about the civilians that had to choose between their family and their values, and survive with the consequences both armies left to them.

With the talent of the Delaware Theater Company, the stories of 6 locals will be remembered for their humanity and perseverance in this unique and theatrical storytelling.
