Geauga County Sheriff Dispatch will be activating sirens on Weds. Mar. 18 at 9:50 AM for the Ohio Statewide Tornado Drill during Severe Weather Awareness Week.

The former Fire Siren on top of the Bainbridge Twp. Fire Station will be activated, as well as other sirens in Geauga County simultaneously for a 3-minute period. This test is to verify that everything is working as expected.

Please understand that this siren was never designed initially to be used as a Tornado Siren and may not be heard inside many residences. Its intended use is to notify anyone that may be outside in their yards. Weather Radios and Mobile Device Weather Apps are still the more reliable option for Severe Weather notifications.

You may have heard that it is going to be cold for the next week. Here are some tips to stay warm safely:

-Pre‑charge phones and other devices and keep flashlights and extra batteries handy.

PLEASE BE CAREFUL IN THIS FREEZE!

HEATING is a leading cause of US home fires and home fire injuries and third leading cause of home fire deaths. December, January and February are the peak months for heating fires. SPACE HEATERS are the type of equipment most often involved in home heating equipment fires, accounting for one-third of the fires, as well as the vast majority of deaths and injuries in home fires caused by heating equipment.
• ALWAYS turn Space Heaters off when going to bed or leaving the room.
• ALWAYS keep Space Heaters at least 3-feet away from anything that can burn.
• Always plug Space Heaters directly into electrical receptacles and NEVER into an extension cord or power strip.
• Make sure you have WORKING Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide Detectors!

At 5:45 am Saturday morning the Bainbridge Twp. Fire Dept. was dispatched to a report of a residential structure fire in the Canyon Lakes sub-development. A family of four were awakened by their smoke detectors to find heavy smoke inside and immediately evacuated. Once outside, they saw fire coming out of a second story bedroom window that was just occupied. Neighboring Fire Depts. were called to assist and the fire was quickly extinguished. Crews experienced heavy smoke and visibility conditions along with complications related to the freezing temperatures. There were no civilian, pets or firefighter injuries.
We have stressed the importance of having working smoke detectors for many years. This family survived because their smoke detectors woke them up and they evacuated in time. At the time of our arrival, only minutes later, conditions presented where any occupants would have been overcome by heavy smoke and heat if still inside.
Extensive Fire damage resulted to rooms and attic space on the second floor with smoke damage throughout. The house will not be lived in for some time, but fortunately a father, mother, and two adult children are alive and safe. The cause of this fire is still under investigation.
Mission Accomplished!
