St. Bernard Parish Government appeared before the 34th Judicial District Court, Division D, Hon. Darren Roy presiding, this morning in its case against the Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans ("Port NOLA") and the Port of St. Bernard, case no. 23-1006.

The Parish filed suit after Port NOLA moved forward with plans to construct the Louisiana International Port within St. Bernard Parish without the jurisdictional authority to do so. Today's hearing addressed exceptions of no cause of action filed by Port NOLA and the Port of St. Bernard, following full briefing by all parties.

Parish counsel, Kyle Kirsch, presented the Parish's position clearly and thoroughly to the Court. The hearing proceeded without objection from the bench, and at the close of arguments, the Court took the matter under advisement. The presiding judge indicated a ruling is expected as early as next week.

This morning, St. Bernard Parish Government along with elected officials and community members came together to honor and remember the lives lost during Hurricane Katrina with a wreath-laying ceremony.

Twenty-one years later, we pause to remember our family members, friends, neighbors and all those whose lives were lost during one of the most devastating events in our community’s history.

Hurricane Katrina Remembrance Ceremony

21 Years Later, We Still Remember.

Today marks the 21st anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, a day that forever changed St. Bernard Parish and the lives of so many who called it home.

As we remember those we lost and reflect on the lasting impact of the storm, we are resharing the powerful story of St. Bernard resident Dorothy Taquino.

Dorothy lost her life during Hurricane Katrina and remained unidentified for nearly 20 years. After finally being identified, she was brought home to St. Bernard Parish earlier this year.

Twenty-one years later, her story is a powerful reminder that behind every loss is a life, a family, and a story that deserves to be remembered.
