On June 6, 1944, more than 150,000 Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy, France, in the greatest amphibious landing in history. D-Day marked the critical turning point of World War II, opening the Western Front and beginning the liberation of Europe.

But an operation of this scale required an unimaginable mountain of logistics—and right here in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, Letterkenny Ordnance Depot was the engine making it happen.

Known as the "Springboard of Invasion," Letterkenny moved millions of tons of supplies. Almost every bullet, mortar, and bomb that supported our troops on the beaches of Normandy passed right through our backyard.

Today, we honor the incredible bravery of the soldiers who landed on those shores, and the dedication of the local workforce who gave them the tools to win.

Yesterday, we were honored to host Lt. Gen. Gavin Lawrence, Deputy Commanding General of U.S. Army Materiel Command (AMC), for an impactful visit to Letterkenny Army Depot!

During the visit, LTG Lawrence received a comprehensive command brief and led a strategic capabilities discussion focused on how LEAD is driving modernization, readiness, and sustainment for the Joint Warfighter.

The itinerary highlighted the incredible footprint of the Organic Industrial Base (OIB), including:

LEAD Production Facilities: A firsthand tour demonstrating our advanced maintenance, manufacturing, and engineering capabilities.

Letterkenny Munitions Center (LEMC): A close look at missile and ammunition distribution, maintenance, and storage excellence.

Visits like these reinforce the vital link between AMC leadership and the dedicated workforce executing the mission on the shop floor every day. Thank you, LTG Lawrence, for your leadership and commitment to Army readiness!

At Letterkenny Army Depot, we are taking conservation to new heights.

While tracking the newly released Northern Bobwhite Quail, University of Delaware graduate researchers are also studying how native songbirds utilize the installation's restored early successional habitats.

As part of this crucial study, Gray Catbirds, Eastern Towhees, and Yellow-breasted Chats are being safely captured, measured, and fitted with trackers to monitor their movements and migration routes. This research provides valuable data on how managed lands support Pennsylvania’s Species of Greatest Conservation Need.

All banding is conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey.
