REMINDER: Franklin County staff will be performing a mosquito control spray tonight in Greene and Guilford townships.

Franklin County staff will be spraying for adult mosquitoes beginning around sunset on Tuesday, September 1 in Greene and Guilford townships and on Wednesday, September 2 in Washington Township and Waynesboro Borough.

On Saturday, Commissioners Horst and Flannery presented Franklin County resident Amy Keifman with a citation celebrating her 100th birthday.

Betty was born on August 28, 1926, in Hopewell, Bedford County. She was the beloved wife of the late Eugene Keifman, and together they built a loving home in St. Thomas where they raised four children. Amy dedicated herself to her family as a stay‑at‑home mother, actively supporting youth activities and serving as a Sunday school pianist at St. Thomas Methodist Church.

After Eugene’s passing, Amy showed great strength and independence, remaining in her home for many years before later moving to Providence Place and then Transitions Healthcare Shook Home, where her kindness and faith continue to inspire others. She is blessed with many grandchildren and great‑grandchildren, and her 100 years of life reflect her deep faith, perseverance, devotion to family, and lifelong service to others.

Happy birthday, Amy! We wish you many more years of good health and happiness.

The Franklin County Area Agency on Aging, in partnership with Keystone Health and Chambers' Apothecary, is offering a series of mobile flu vaccination clinics at our senior centers in September and October.

Clinics will be held on these dates at these locations:

Here in Franklin County, quiet acts of compassion happen every day with many of those good deeds coming from Franklin County’s dedicated Community Connections staff. Their ongoing outreach to individuals experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless continues to grow, adapt and inspire, offering both tangible support and moments of hope to those in need often when they need it most.

One of the department’s major efforts is the Point-in-Time (PIT) Count, a critical initiative that helps identify how many people in our community are currently experiencing homelessness. While the mandatory count happens each January, for the past 13 years Community Connections has voluntarily conducted an additional summer count. In July, staff and volunteers documented 75 individuals without stable housing, 39 of whom were living unsheltered. Though this number is lower than winter’s count of 102, the results of the summer count demonstrate a need for services year-round.

Counting is just one part of the PIT Count effort. The volunteers performing are also equipped with resource packets, hygiene kits, ponchos, snacks and information on local support programs and resources. When someone needs more substantial items—like a tent or a sleeping bag—the Community Connections staff follows up with that individual the next day to make sure those supplies are delivered. Many volunteers already know those they’re encountering and supporting, reinforcing the trust and relationships that have been built between the individuals and department staff over time.

The PIT Count is just one component of Community Connections’ overall, year-round efforts focused on connecting chronically homeless individuals to permanent housing solutions. While rising housing costs and limited local options can present challenges, success stories and small victories still emerge. In 2026, several participants in Community Connections’ permanent supportive housing program transitioned into Section 8 Housing. Those moves opened spaces that allowed new individuals to receive assistance through the housing program. One participant achieved something even more remarkable. After less than three years in the program, she secured housing completely on her own without Section 8 support. With guidance from the Community Connections team, she obtained her Social Security benefits, saved money and ultimately reached a place of stability and independence.

The generosity of the local community also plays a huge role in assisting Community Connections’ ability to offer support. Donations of clothing and hygiene supplies arrive consistently at times dropped off anonymously by individuals who simply want to help others. These items are then placed outside the Community Connections office at 39 North Second Street, Chambersburg, for easy pickup, ensuring that anyone in need can access essentials with dignity and without barriers.

Community Connections plans to offer its Giving Tree during the upcoming holiday season. Beginning in mid-November, the staff will place a tree filled with hygiene packets, snacks, hand warmers, bottled water and other necessities outside of its office. Anyone is welcome to take what they need. The tree will remain in place well past the holidays, serving as a symbol of ongoing care rather than just seasonal charity.

Community Connections welcomes volunteers and donations throughout the year. On Wednesday, the Franklin County Commissioners recognized Teresa Beckner, the county’s Chief Financial Officer, who was recently among a group of public finance professionals to be recognized with a GFOA of the US & Canada Recognition for Outstanding Public Service Award.

This award honors GFOA members whose dedication, leadership and commitment to public service have made a meaningful impact on their organizations, colleagues and communities.

Teresa has dedicated more than 20 years to serving Franklin County. As CFO, she has helped guide the county’s financial operations through careful planning, collaboration and a commitment to responsible stewardship of public resources. Teresa has worked closely with the county treasurer on an investment program that has increased interest earnings while supporting cash flow management. She also led the consolidation of accounting positions across the county, improving the use of state and federal resources and reducing pressure on the local general fund. Her efforts have supported more coordinated operations and long-term financial planning throughout the organization.

Teresa’s leadership also includes a strong focus on developing others and preparing the organization for the future. She invests in staff, encourages professional growth, and helps build the next generation of public finance leaders. Teresa applies GFOA best practices throughout her work, with a focus on transparency, accountability and responsible financial management. Greene Township Board of Supervisors, Franklin County PA has announced a portion of White Church Road will be temporarily closed starting Monday, August 31.

Greene Township will also begin line painting throughout the township starting Saturday, August 29.

Motorists traveling through Franklin County should be advised that the Borough of Chambersburg has announced an upcoming closure of Limekiln Drive for a bridge replacement project.

Starting Monday, August 31, Limekiln Drive will be closed and accessible for local traffic only up until the construction zone of the bridge over the Falling Spring Creek. The bridge will be impassable. A signed detour will be in effect and construction is expected to take 6 to 8 weeks to complete.
