The University of Illinois Division of Public Safety and Fighting Illini Athletics will implement a lot-specific traffic-routing system for the 2026 Illinois football season.

With season tickets sold out for the second consecutive year and record crowds expected at Gies Memorial Stadium, the updated traffic plan is designed to reduce congestion, improve traffic flow and provide the most efficient access possible given the large crowds.

On Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at approximately 2:26 p.m., METCAD 911 received multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired and a person suffering from a gunshot wound in the area of Carver Drive. Upon arrival, officers located a 22-year-old male victim suffering from a potentially life-threatening gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Following surgery, He remains hospitalized in critical condition.

While the call initially came out as an Urbana address, investigators quickly determined that the shooting occurred in the 1300 block of Carver Drive in Champaign. The Champaign Police Department assumed primary investigative responsibility. Preliminary information indicates that an altercation occurred at the scene, followed by shots being fired and the victim being struck by gunfire. Following the shooting, the other person or persons involved fled the scene on foot. No arrests have been made at this time and the investigation is ongoing.

The Champaign Police Department is proud to take care of our heroes, whether they're serving here or abroad. We're thankful for Officer Sanchez' kind words in his nomination, and for ESGR for recognizing us as an employer that cares.

Illinois Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve's Chair Emerita, Laurie Silvey, presented the Pro Patria award to the Champaign Police Department on August 19, during their All-Command Meeting at police headquarters in Champaign, attended by 30 personnel. Sgt. Justin Sanchez, U.S. Army Reserve, nominated the department for the award and Police Chief Timothy Tyler accepted and signed the ESGR Statement of Support for Guard and Reserve.
Sanchez told the gathering, "I know that when one of us deploys, it places a real burden on the department. Shifts still need to be covered, calls still need to be answered, and my fellow officers stepped up to carry that extra weight in my absence. I do not take that sacrifice for granted.
From day one, the leadership at the Champaign Police Department removed the weight of worrying about home from my shoulders. They made sure I felt valued, not like a logistical burden.
And it didn't stop at the office. To have fellow officers step up—whether it was cutting the grass, taking my kids to school, or driving them to extracurricular activities—that meant more to my wife and me than I can adequately put into words. Receiving care packages overseas was a great reminder of the team I belonged to, but knowing my family was taken care of gave me total peace of mind.
While our department didn't receive the national Freedom Award this year, standing here today presenting the Illinois ESGR Pro Patria Award—the highest state-level honor ESGR can bestow—is proof of what we already know: the culture of support, respect, and camaraderie at the Champaign Police Department is second to none."🇺🇸

Just under two hours left at the Crisis Nursery touch-a-truck at Carle at the Fields! We're here until 1pm today (Saturday, 8/22), teaching kiddos about fingerprinting and letting them climb around in a squad car!

Bring the little ones to Carle at the Fields tomorrow morning as CPD joins Crisis Nursery for their annual touch-a-truck event! We'll see you there for an opportunity to learn about police vehicles and meet some of our officers!

Congratulations to Probationary Police Officers Fifield, Darling, Bailey, Lara, and Alblinger (L to R), who graduate today from the University of Illinois Police Training Institute! Special congratulations are also in order to Probationary Officer Bailey, who served as a Squad Leader, and Probationary Officer Fifleld, who received the Clifford VanMeter Scholastic Achievement Award! Fifield was the top academic performer in the class, with a GPA of 96.62%. Wow!

These five officers will now move into CPD’s 20-week Field Training program, taking the lessons they learned at the academy and applying them to the daily duties of a law enforcement professional serving the Champaign community!
