Give Back Garden

Give Back Garden Harvested produce is available in our lobby on a first-come, first-served basis. The "Give Back Garden" is a project of Champaign-Urbana Public Health District.

Champaign-Urbana Public Health District's Give Back Garden aims to provide high-quality, fresh produce to those members of the local community that need it most. It is an opportunity for people from Champaign County to discuss their gardens, offer suggestions and advice to new gardeners, promote local Farmer's Markets and gardening events, encourage the use of LINK cards to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, and as a resource for donating excess produce to local food pantries.

If you're looking for a lighthearted, easy watch, Netflix released This Is A Gardening Show: a documentary series with bite-sized 15-minute episodes all about gardening topics.

The satirical title says it all. Comedian Zach Galifianakis brings his signature dry humor to the world of gardening, taking viewers to farms and forests across the country to learn tips and tricks in the most entertaining way possible. Topics include apples, tomatoes, foraging, root vegetables, corn, and compost.

Whether you're an established gardener or completely new to it, there's something here for everyone! An article from The Guardian highlighted the show as an excellent way to spark genuine interest in gardening among younger generations, making it a great pick for watching with kids, grandkids, or any young person in your life.

Before you fall in love with that plant at the nursery — check the tag! 🏷️🌸

The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map uses a 30-year average (1991–2020) to show extreme minimum winter temps across zones 1 (coldest) to 13 (warmest).

Here in Champaign County, we're Zone 6a — meaning winter temps can plunge to -10 to -5°F (-23.3 to -20.6°C)! This time of year, knowing your zone is key when buying perennials, shrubs, and trees.

Look for zone tags on seed packets, nursery tags, websites, catalogs, and reference books. MasterClass.com has an awesome list of Zone 6 plants that can handle our weather! 🌡️
