Champaign-Urbana Public Health District Champaign Urbana Public Health District - Health prevention, education, collaboration, and regulation

The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD) has worked since 1937 to prevent disease and promote public health. In 1996, the Champaign County Public Health Department was formed by a referendum of county voters bringing many of the same public health services to Champaign County residents living outside Champaign-Urbana. Together, these agencies provide a host of vital services to all Cham

paign-Urbana residents, as well as selected services to Champaign County residents at large. Public Health services include, but are not limited to, environmental health inspections and permits; disease tracking, reporting, and investigation; HIV counseling and testing, prevention, and management; sexually transmitted disease testing and treatment; dental services for children; education and health promotion; preventive services and case management for women; immunizations; and an array of other services to pregnant women, children, teenagers, and adults of all ages.

Champaign-Urbana Public Health District to Begin Distribution of Padagis® Naloxone Nasal Spray

New generic option keeps naloxone free and available to county residents.

CHAMPAIGN, IL – The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District’s (CUPHD) Teen and Adult Services (TAS) Division Overdose Prevention Program is now providing Padagis® Naloxone Nasal Spray free to county residents.

The State of Illinois recently transitioned from the brand name NARCAN® to generic Padagis®, which still contains the same 4mg dose of naloxone and works in the body in the same way to treat opioid overdoses. The change to a lower-cost generic naloxone spray means funding can be stretched further, increasing access to this life-saving medication.

In 2024 and 2025 combined, CUPHD distributed more than 28,000 naloxone kits to community members. According to CUPHD's Fatal Drug Overdose Data Dashboard, Champaign County saw opioid-related deaths drop 67.5% from 2023 to 2024. While 2025 saw an uptick, opioid-related deaths remained lower than 2023 levels by 55%.

"We're excited to offer this generic version of Narcan®! Naloxone has worked so well to reduce overdose deaths in our community and now this Padagis® version will allow us to continue our work in the opioid crisis,” says Harm Reduction Program Coordinator Joe Trotter.

Kits are free and can be picked up at the TAS check-in window located in the CUPHD lobby at 201 W. Kenyon Rd., Champaign. Delivery is also available by calling 217-531-5370 or emailing Joe Trotter at [email protected].

Before you head to the fair, concert, festival, or any other outdoor fun:

🧴 Repel mosquitoes with EPA-registered insect repellent
👕 Cover up when you can
💧 Dump standing water around your home

🎟️ Have fun. Make memories. Make sure the mosquitoes get denied at the gate. 🦟🚫

Tiny doesn't mean harmless.

The ticks in these photos are larvae—the earliest active stage in a tick's life cycle. They're about the size of a poppy seed, making them easy to overlook after spending time outdoors.

Whether you're hiking, gardening, camping, or simply enjoying your backyard, a few simple habits can help protect you and your family:

✔️Use an EPA-registered insect repellent.
✔️Wear long sleeves and pants when possible in grassy or wooded areas.
✔️Check yourself, your children, and your pets for ticks after being outdoors.
✔️Shower soon after coming inside to help wash away unattached ticks and make it easier to spot any that may be crawling on you.

A quick tick check only takes a few minutes and it can make a big difference.

Gratitude isn't about pretending everything is perfect. It's about training your mind to notice moments of good that already exist. That practice can quiet stress and create space for a lighter mindset. What's one small thing you can appreciate today?

Looking for more ways to support your mental wellbeing? CUPHD's CredibleMind page offers free, trusted tools and resources on stress, mindfulness, and more.
