Hey Champlin,

Over the weekend, one of our officers was conducting a traffic stop when a suspected drunk driver failed to move over and struck the squad car.

Thankfully, our officer was not outside of the vehicle and was not severely injured. The same cannot be said for the squad, which sustained significant damage.

This crash is an important reminder of why Minnesota’s Move Over Law exists.

When you see emergency vehicles, law enforcement, tow trucks, maintenance vehicles, or other authorized vehicles stopped on the side of the road with their emergency lights activated, you are required to move over to an adjacent lane if you can do so safely. If changing lanes isn’t possible, you must slow down and proceed with caution.

These aren’t just flashing lights on the shoulder. They represent people doing their jobs - helping motorists, investigating crashes, enforcing traffic laws, and working to keep our community safe. Every traffic stop carries risks, and passing drivers have the power to reduce those risks by staying alert, slowing down, and moving over.

A damaged squad car can be repaired. A life cannot.

Please remember: Put down the phone. Never drive impaired. Slow down. Move over.

It could save someone’s life.

June 14 marks one year since a tragedy profoundly impacted our community and communities across Minnesota. 🕯💙

At the June 8 Champlin City Council meeting, the Mayor and City Council took time to honor and remember the lives of Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark Hortman, and their beloved dog Gilbert, and to recognize the courage and resilience of Senator John Hoffman, his wife Yvette Hoffman, and their daughter Hope.

At dusk on June 14, residents are invited to light a candle and place it on their doorstep in remembrance, as a symbol of hope, reflection, and unity.

We remember Melissa Hortman, Mark Hortman, and Gilbert, and honor their lives, their service, and the lasting impact they made on our communities.

We continue to stand with Senator John Hoffman, Yvette Hoffman, and Hope Hoffman, recognizing their strength and resilience in the face of unimaginable adversity.

We also recognize the officers and first responders whose courage and service that night will not be forgotten.

As a community, we stand united in condemning violence and reaffirm our commitment to being a safe, respectful, and connected place for all.

“As City of Champlin Police Chief, I acknowledge the profound impact the attempted assassination of Senator John Hoffman and his wife, along with the tragic loss of Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, has had on their families and our entire community. These acts of violence have deeply shaken Champlin and our surrounding communities, reinforcing both our shared sense of vulnerability and our resolve to stand united in support of all those affected. Our thoughts remain with the Hoffman family as they recover, and we mourn alongside those grieving the devastating loss of Representative Hortman and her husband. Champlin and the broader community will continue to come together with strength and compassion, ensuring that such acts do not define us but instead strengthen our commitment to one another. Today’s guilty plea represents a significant step towards recovery for the affected families, and we are grateful for all the work that has been put into this case by the law enforcement community.”

Hey Champlin!

Over the course of two days, 31 kids participated in our Home Alone Safety class at the Champlin Police Department. These young participants learned important skills to help them stay safe and make smart decisions when home alone.

Topics covered include:
✔️ Home safety and organization
✔️ Basic first aid
✔️ Kitchen safety
✔️ Severe weather preparedness
✔️ Fire safety

A special thank you to Allina Paramedics for bringing an ambulance for a rig tour and teaching students about basic first aid and when to call for help.

Thank you as well to the Anoka-Champlin Fire Department for providing a safety house trailer, which allowed kiddos to practice escaping through a door or window in a smoke-filled environment.

This class would not have been possible without the help of our dedicated Police Explorers and clerical staff, who assisted throughout both days of the class.

And finally, a VERY special thank you to Investigator Mortinson for coordinating, organizing, and teaching this year’s class. Your commitment to educating and empowering your community’s youth is greatly appreciated!

Thank you to all the families who trusted us with their children. We hope each participant left with new knowledge, increased confidence, and skills that will help keep them safe 💙

Hey Champlin!

Today, we say farewell to one of our Police Records Clerks as she begins a new chapter focused on spending more time with her family.

Barb joined the Champlin Police Department in 2023 after serving 26 years with Hennepin County Dispatch. Throughout her career in public safety, she has worked behind the scenes in support of first responders and the communities they serve.

Please join us in wishing her the best as she embarks on this next adventure. Thank you for your years of dedication to public service, and we hope this new chapter brings you joy, relaxation, and many special moments with those you love most.

Hey Champlin!

This year’s Guns & Hoses Softball Game champions are… the Anoka-Champlin Fire Department ! 🏆

After police took home bragging rights last year, the firefighters came ready to bring the heat! Their bats were on fire, their defense was smoking, and they managed to extinguish our hopes of a repeat championship.

Congratulations to the ACFD on a well-earned victory! We may have gotten burned this year, but we’ll be back next season looking to turn up the pressure and reclaim the title 🚔⚾

Thanks to everyone who came out to support this annual tradition of friendly competition between our police and fire departments. Until next year… stay safe and remember: some rivalries are just too hot to handle!

He looks like a cute little mutt, is white with black spots, no chip and no collar.
