๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’› Busy Week Again for Our Key Clubs! ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’™

Both the Hamilton High School and Chandler High School Key Clubs held introduction meetings this week to learn more about what Key Club is all about!

Mike Lang and Nancy Campbell shared information about the Kiwanis International family and how the Chandler Kiwanis Club can support our Key Clubs through service projects, volunteer opportunities, leadership development, and ways to make a difference throughout our community.

Both clubs are part of the Papago Key Club Division, which is encouraging each club to complete two large service projects this semesterโ€”including a blood drive and a food drive benefiting AZCEND.

We were excited to see a great turnout at both meetings, and we hope to see these clubs continue to grow throughout the school year!

Key Club is about so much more than community service. Itโ€™s about building leadership, character, confidence, friendships, and memories that last a lifetime.

Hereโ€™s to an amazing year of SERVING, LEADING & GROWING together!๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›

Vega and Nancy from the Chandler Kiwanis Club are excited to sponsor the ACP High School Key Club! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›

Today was the Key Club interest and introduction meetingโ€”and they came out with a HUGE bang! ๐ŸŽ‰ 656 students expressed interest in joining! What an incredible response!

To make this even more exciting, ACP is creating smaller clubs within the Key Club, each with its own board members who will also be required to be members of Key Club. Talk about a BIG club with mini-clubs working together! ๐Ÿ™Œ

We are so excited for the upcoming school year and all the opportunities these students will have to serve their school and community. With 656 students interested, itโ€™s going to be an AWESOME year! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›

Something about Chandler - DID YOU KNOW?!?

Ostriches and the city of Chandler, Arizona, are deeply linked through a booming early 20th-century agricultural movement started by the city's founder, Dr. Alexander J. Chandler.
Today, this historical connection is widely celebrated through public art and a massive annual community festival. The connection boils down to four main points:
1. The Ostrich Ranching PioneerIn the late 1890s and early 1900s, womenโ€™s high-fashion hats required a steady supply of luxurious plumes. Recognizing that the hot, dry climate of the Salt River Valley perfectly mirrored the ostrich's native African habitat, Dr. A.J. Chandler became one of the first entrepreneurs to bring ostriches to Arizona. He established a massive ostrich farm on his land, creating one of the largest herds in the region.
2. The 1914 Ostrich BoomBy 1914โ€”just two years after the city was foundedโ€”the industry had completely taken off. A famous front-page headline in the local newspaper, the Chandler Arizonan, proclaimed, "Ostriches are all the rage in Chandler, and dot the landscape by the hundreds". Local residents and tourists frequently gathered along Dr. Chandler's property fences to watch the exotic birds.
3. The Annual Ostrich FestivalThough World War I and changing fashion trends eventually crushed the feather market, Chandler never forgot its quirky heritage. In 1989, the Chandler Chamber of Commerce launched the Chandler Chamber Ostrich Festival to honor Dr. Chandler and the city's unique history. It has since grown into a massive Southwest tradition attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors for concerts, carnival rides, and ostrich-themed attractions.
4. Modern City Identity. The ostrich remains an official symbol of the community. If you walk through Downtown Chandler, you will spot decorative ostrich statues and themed public art installations honoring the birds. There is even a popular historic underground speakeasy located right beneath the San Marcos Hotel (built by Dr. Chandler) aptly named The Ostrich. Its a fun place to enjoy with friends!
