While no two days are ever the same, a typical shift follows a rhythm focused on keeping the community safe and responding whenever residents need help.
The deputies assigned to Chanhassen through the Carver County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) spend each shift balancing proactive patrol, emergency response, investigations and community engagement.
Start of Shift
Each shift begins with a briefing, where deputies receive updates on recent incidents, ongoing investigations, road closures, wanted individuals and other information that may affect patrol activities. They inspect their squad vehicles, ensure equipment is ready and prepare to respond to calls across the city.
Responding to Calls
At any moment, a radio call can send deputies to a new assignment. Calls may involve medical emergencies, suspicious activity, thefts, fraud investigations, traffic crashes, noise complaints, welfare checks or requests to assist other public safety agencies. In fact, serious crime accounts for only a small portion of the calls deputies handle in Chanhassen. Much of their work focuses on helping residents during unexpected situations and resolving problems before they escalate.
Community Connections
Throughout the day, deputies also look for opportunities to build relationships with the people they serve. They may stop by local businesses, attend community events, visit schools or simply take time to answer questions from residents while on patrol. Those conversations help strengthen trust and reinforce the partnership between law enforcement and the community.
On Patrol
Once on the road, deputies actively patrol neighborhoods, parks and business districts while watching for unsafe driving behaviors such as speeding, distracted driving and impaired driving. Traffic enforcement is an important part of the job, helping prevent crashes before they happen and improving safety for everyone on Chanhassen roads. Deputies also make routine business checks, monitor school areas and remain visible throughout the community.
Behind the Scenes
The work does not end when a call is cleared. Deputies spend a significant portion of each shift completing reports, documenting evidence, reviewing body-worn camera footage and following up of investigations. This behind-the-scenes work helps ensure cases are thoroughly documented and supports future court proceedings when necessary.
A deputy's day can change in an instant, shifting from routine patrol to an emergency response within seconds. Flexibility, teamwork and constant readiness are essential parts of the job.
