Now is a great time to make sure your emergency weather kit is ready and your family has a plan for where to go and what to do during severe weather. Practice your plan together and keep essential supplies packed in a go-bag or stored in your shelter area, such as a basement or interior room.

Your emergency kit should include:
• Flashlight and extra batteries
• Phone charger or portable power bank
• Bottled water
• Non-perishable snacks (granola bars, crackers, canned foods)
• Necessary medications
• Pet food and supplies
• NOAA weather radio
• First aid kit
• Important documents in a waterproof container
• Blankets and extra clothing
• Personal hygiene items

Being prepared before severe weather strikes can make all the difference. Take a few minutes today to check your supplies, replace expired items, and make sure everyone in your household knows the plan. Stay informed, stay prepared, and stay safe!

Millions across the U.S. are facing their first round of summer heat this week! 🌡️🥵

Your first instinct on a 90-degree day may be to get in the car, crank the AC to max and sit there, but there’s a much faster way to clear out stagnant air. ⤵️

And remember: a parked car gets dangerously hot instantly. Never leave a child alone in a vehicle — not even for a second.

UPDATE:

The newest forecast for Illinois has changed a bit. Areas in nearly the top half of the state--north of line from Macomb to Kankakee--now have an enhanced risk (level 3 of 5) for dangerous weather tomorrow (Wednesday) and tomorrow night.

Think ahead about your plans. Do you have kids' activities outdoors that afternoon and evening? Are you on a golf league? Will you be driving?

One of the most impactful demonstrations at Night at the Station was our Close Before You Doze burn demonstration.
Our goal was simple: increase awareness about the life-saving benefits of sleeping with your bedroom door closed.
In the photos below, the room on the right had its door closed, while the room on the left had its door open. The difference is remarkable. Throughout the demonstration, the closed-door room remained largely unaffected, while the open-door room quickly filled with smoke and experienced significant heat and smoke damage.
In just 25 seconds, the open-door room was already about half filled with smoke.
After 50 seconds, the room was nearly completely filled with smoke.
The heat became so intense that the plastic shield used during the demonstration to help contain smoke was heavily damaged by the heat and smoke alone.

The Close Before You Doze campaign was developed by the Fire Safety Research Institute after more than a decade of scientific research. Their studies showed that a closed bedroom door can act as a critical barrier against deadly smoke, toxic gases, and extreme heat during a house fire, providing valuable time to escape and survive.
Before going to bed tonight, take a moment to close your bedroom door. It is a simple step that could make a life-saving difference for you and your family.

A HUGE thank you to the Northern Illinois Fire Sprinkler Advisory Board for building and providing this incredible burn demonstration!

Your dedication to fire safety education helps families better understand the life-saving benefits of home fire sprinklers. We are grateful for your partnership and commitment to making our communities safer through hands-on learning and public outreach.

Thank you for helping us educate, inspire, and protect families throughout our community!

It’s National Trailer Safety Week! 🛻🛥️ Handling a heavy load changes everything about how your vehicle drives.

Don't hit the road without checking these 4 rules:
💪 Ensure your vehicle can safely handle the trailer's max weight
⚖️ Load the front half heavier to prevent dangerous trailer sway
🪢 Use heavy-duty straps so cargo can't shift
🔗 Cross safety chains in case of hitch failure
