We want to send a huge shoutout to our amazing city mechanics!Day in and day out, they work hard behind the scenes. They fix, maintain, and inspect our fire trucks so our firefighters can always answer the call.When an emergency happens, our community counts on these trucks to start and run safely. Congratulations, Lieutenant Preston “Pete” Keating!

Today, we honor Lieutenant Pete Keating as he retires after 29 years of faithful service to the Chanute Fire Department.

For nearly three decades, Pete has answered the call with courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the people of Chanute. Through emergency calls, long nights, holidays away from family, and countless moments of service, he has led by example and earned the respect of those who have had the privilege of serving beside him.

The fire service is more than a career—it is a calling. Pete embraced that calling with humility, professionalism, and dedication every single day. His leadership, friendship, and steady presence have left a lasting mark on our department and our community.

While retirement marks the end of one chapter, it also celebrates a lifetime of service that will never be forgotten. We are grateful for the sacrifices he and his family have made over the past 29 years, allowing him to serve others when they needed help most.

Chanute Fire Department was honored to attend today's special ceremony at the SEK Impact Center where the Kansas Highway Patrol proclaimed Hatten Gleue an Honorary Trooper.

Hatten was recognized for his courage, quick thinking, and decisive action when he used his vehicle to stop a downed airplane from being blown across an open field, helping prevent a potentially dangerous situation from becoming worse.

Adding to the special occasion, pilot John Von Fange traveled from South Carolina and flew in to attend the ceremony personally. It was a meaningful opportunity for those connected to the incident to come together and celebrate Hatten's heroic actions and the positive outcome of that day.

We congratulate Hatten on this well-deserved honor and commend him for demonstrating the kind of courage and selflessness that makes our communities stronger. Thank you to the Kansas Highway Patrol for recognizing this outstanding young man.

Congratulations, Hatten! Your actions made a difference, and we are proud to celebrate this special achievement with you.

It’s been a long time coming!

Back in 2022 The City of Chanute received funds through the American Rescue Plan Act in wake of the Covid-19 Pandemic. The city commission authorized us to purchase a new Fire engine to replace our 2001 Freight-liner “Engine 2”.

After countless hours of pre-planning and meetings with the truck committee, and a few years in production, The Chanute Fire Department is bringing home a new Sutphen custom “Engine 2”.

Over the next few weeks personnel will be up-fitting this engine with the proper tools and supplies that are needed, as well as training on the fire apparatus before it is put fully in service.

The Chanute Fire Department, Chanute Police Department, and NMRMC EMS responded to a reported structure fire at 712 N. Kansas.

Upon arrival, crews found a single-story residence fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters immediately conducted searches of the home while beginning fire suppression efforts. Both primary and secondary searches confirmed that no occupants were inside the residence.

Fire crews were able to bring the fire under control and remained on scene completing overhaul operations to ensure all remaining hot spots were extinguished.

The origin and cause of the fire are currently under investigation by the Chanute Fire Department, Chanute Police Department, and the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office.

We are thankful for the coordinated efforts of all responding agencies and for the safety of everyone involved

Chanute Fire Department Responds to Emergency Aircraft Landing Near US-169
CHANUTE, KS – At approximately 2:55 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, the Chanute Fire Department responded to a multi-stage aircraft incident occurring near the intersection of US-169 highway and 240th Road.

The incident began when a single-engine aircraft suffered total engine failure southwest of Chanute. The pilot immediately deployed the aircraft’s emergency parachute system and attempted to reach the Chanute Airport. Due to low visibility from cloud cover, the pilot missed the approach and was forced to attempt a landing in a field.

The aircraft impacted the ground east of US-169, landing on its top and sliding north. A passing motorist witnessed the descent, drove through a fence into the field, and utilized their vehicle to physically stop the sliding aircraft. However, while the aircraft was stationary, a heavy gust of wind caught the deployed parachute. The force of the wind flipped the plane over the motorist’s vehicle and dragged it westbound across the lanes of US-169. The aircraft eventually came to rest in a tree row just west of the highway.

Investigation: The FAA and NTSB have been notified and will lead the investigation into the engine failure.

The Chanute Fire Department commends the rapid response of our crews and the assistance of the Kansas Highway Patrol in managing this highly unusual and moving scene.
