New Hope has been compiling data (volunteer training records, truck maintenance, tool inventory, etc.) in preparation for our ISO (insurance rating) evaluation by the North Carolina Department of Insurance. We also need to demonstrate (some by video) our preparedness and ability to provide water to a fire in a rural / water haul environment. Last week we worked on some of the practical requirements for the evaluation.

Earlier this week, on Tuesday night, there was a joint meeting of the Orange County Board of Commissioners and the Orange County Chiefs Association.
One of the topics covered was recognition for length of service for fire/rescue personnel. Just 41 individuals (across 7 departments) represented more than 1,200 years of service and experience!
On a side note, for our firefighters –
As these “old-timers” approach that day when they will hang-up their helmets, the next generation needs to be prepared to fill some rather large boots!
Training, solid experience, and advanced certification are imperative goals for new drivers, engineers and officers.
Will you be ready, when the time comes, to step up?

October is recognized as Fire Prevention Month.
Earlier this week, New Hope shared fire safety information with a local pre-school.
Some of the messages we covered included “stop, drop, and roll” as well as the phone number for 9-1-1.
The little ones got to see a firefighter in full turnout gear, with the hope for them to remember that firefighters are helpers and their friends.
Each of the students also had the opportunity to touch-a-truck as they walked through the cab.
And, of course, they each got a plastic fire helmet! (To be distributed by the teachers at the end of the day.)

DURHAM FIREFIGHTER KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY

(DURHAM COUNTY, N.C) — The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation received a request for assistance from the City of Durham Fire Department regarding an early-morning structure fire. Around 3:15 AM today, a 911 call reported a fire at 410 Marly Dr., Durham, NC. The first fire truck arrived at 3:21 AM, and smoke and flames were visibly coming from the structure. Firefighters began their work, and additional units were en route.

The structure is a multi-story commercial building that appears to have been used as a residence. Firefighters made entry into the building and began battling the blaze. At 3:31 AM, a portion of the building's roof collapsed, causing the second floor to collapse as well. Multiple firefighters were on the roof and inside on the first floor during the collapse. Several firefighters on the first floor were trapped. As a result, one of the firefighters was killed in the line of duty, and two others were injured. The two injured were taken to Duke Medical Center for treatment. All occupants evacuated the building before the fire department arrived and were not injured.

The SBI’s Arson Unit was requested to investigate the cause and origin of the fire and the circumstances of the fatality. The SBI has special agents on scene collecting evidence and investigating. The SBI will be the lead investigating agency for this event.

The following agencies responded and are working the event in some capacity:

-- City of Durham Fire Department
-- City of Durham Police Department
-- Durham County EMS
-- Durham County Sheriff's Office
-- Durham City/County Emergency Management
-- Durham County Fire Marshal’s Office
-- Raleigh Fire Department
-- ATF
-- North Carolina OSFM

This is an active and ongoing investigation, and additional information may be released by the SBI when available.

A good day for New Hope Fire Department!

We had the opportunity to visit Spartan and check out our new apparatus. It’s exciting to see everything coming together and to get one step closer to putting this truck into service for our community.

A lot of planning and hard work has gone into getting to this point, and we’re looking forward to bringing it home to New Hope soon.

This morning around 8:40 AM, New Hope responded to a gas leak call on Whitfield near Lochwood.
Due to a ruptured gas line, Whitfield was shut down between Hwy 86 and Turkey Farm Rd until the gas company could arrive and shut down the line.
New Hope had resources on scene for around an hour with a charged hose line and rerouting traffic to keep the public away from the proximity of a significant hazard.
