Chatham Council on Aging Invites Public to Meet New Director

The Chatham County Council on Aging invites the public to its Meet the Director Open House, where new Executive Director Dennis Streets will be on hand to greet residents. The event will be held at both senior centers:

· May 6 at 4-6 pm at the Eastern Senior Center, located at 365 Highway 87 in Pittsboro

· May 14 at 4-6 pm at the Western Senior Center, located at 112 Village Lake Road in Siler City

The open house includes a floating meet-and-greet opportunity, tour of the senior centers, and light refreshments.

Streets is scheduled to begin his work as executive director of the council on May 1. He recently retired as director of the N.C. Division of Aging in the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. Streets resides in Chatham County.

Spring Workday at the Bynum General Store

Saturday April 19th is the spring Bynum Front Porch workday - Do you want to volunteer for the workday efforts? Help get the property spruced up? Do you need to earn community service hours? Bynum Front Porch has scheduled its spring work day for Saturday April 19 from 10 am to 1 pm. Folks will be working inside and outside the Bynum General Store. There will be some general work as well as of flower planting, digging, raking, hammering, cleaning etc.

Students: To get credit for your community hours obtain a form from your school guidance office or online at your school's website. The form will be signed when you finish. You may come for all 3 hours, or any portion of that time.

Come join the cleanup crew Saturday April 19. See you then!

Active Chatham Grant Deadline Approaching

The deadline is approaching for the Active Chatham Grant. Grant applications must be received by Monday, April 21, 2014. Grant applications have also been opened up to Chatham child care centers that wish to promote programs to increase wellness activities.

The purpose of the Active Chatham Grant is to provide physical activity opportunities for public use located entirely within Chatham County. Funds should be used to enhance or increase access to parks, trails, playgrounds or sidewalks and programs that promote physically active lifestyles.

Applications will be accepted from Chatham County Public Schools, municipalities, and non-profit organizations. Child Care Centers may apply for funds to promote programs that increase wellness activities. Proposed projects must be located entirely within Chatham County. Grant funds are available to a facility that is open to the public on a non-discriminatory basis and supports the goals and objectives of Chatham County Parks and Recreation. Specifically, funds must go toward a project that creates or enhances opportunities for physical activity for members of the public.

Up to $10,000 is available through the grant. We anticipate granting approximately 1-3 awards. Organizations may apply for funding between $1,000 to $10,000.

Chatham Residents Invited to Participate in New Food Council

A task force involved in starting a community-based Chatham Food Council invites residents to apply to serve on the first official council. The Chatham Food Council is expected to convene for the first time in June 2014.

In the last five years, at least 24 counties in North Carolina have formed food councils, which are partnership organizations aimed at bringing together key people involved in local food economies to improve community and regional food systems.

Local food systems include an array of important components, such as community gardens, farmers’ markets, produce stands, farm-school partnerships, transportation and affordability of foods.

Food councils help promote stronger local food systems, including improving access to healthy local foods. They assess the current food situation, make recommendations on how to improve it and communicate recommendations to policymakers and organizations that can take action.

The three major functions of the Chatham Food Council will include: developing a policy agenda based on practical research for policy changes; advocating for specific food systems issues; and sharing information, including events, services, and programs.

Members of the Chatham Food Council must be prepared to attend monthly meetings, but the members will decide when and where the meetings occur.

If you are interested in volunteering to serve on the Chatham Food Council, complete an application form no later than April 30, 2014. The form can be found at The form can be found at http://tinyurl.com/FoodCouncilApp.

You will hear back by May 31 on the status of your application.

There also will be opportunities for people to serve on committees of the Food Council, which will get underway later in the year.

During the months of March and April, Take and Eat Food Pantry will again be participating in the Feinstein $1 Million Challenge to fight hunger in America. One million dollars will be divided proportionately among all agencies participating in the challenge.

For every donation the Take and Eat Food Pantry receives during March and April, the Feinstein Foundation will help contributions grow by adding to them. All cash and food donations count!

WAYS YOU CAN HELP

1. Donate Cash - We will use it to purchase food items at the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC at greatly reduced prices or for fresh produce.

(Make checks payable to Evergreen UMC with "Feinstein Challenge" on the memo line).

2. Donate Food - We especially need canned meats, Lite Fruit, Peanut Butter, 100% juice, No-salt added vegetables, and breakfast foods (to name a few).
