We are excited to share a new resource designed to improve emergency communications: a database of 284 pre-scripted message templates in English and Spanish. Developed using best practices and federal guidelines, these templates can support clear, effective, and timely public warnings during emergencies and disasters.

This database was created by multilingual undergraduate and graduate students as part of the Spring 2026 Latin American and Caribbean Studies course on Language Access Planning for Emergencies and Disasters at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It was produced in collaboration with staff and faculty from the Building Integrated Communities initiative and reviewed by tilde Language Justice Collaborative.

🎉 On Thursday, July 2nd, the Hendersonville City Council unanimously approved a Language Access Plan. The Language Access Plan outlines how the City will interact with community members who speak languages other than English. Over the past six months, staff from the City of Hendersonville, True Ridge, and El Centro de Hendersonville participated in monthly workshops with the Building Integrated Communities team to develop the Language Access Plan.

🎉 El jueves 2 de julio el Consejo Municipal de Hendersonville aprobó el Plan de Acceso Lingüístico por unanimidad. El Plan de Acceso Lingüístico describe cómo el municipio interactuará con miembros de la comunidad que hablan idiomas además de inglés. Durante los últimos seis meses, personal de la Ciudad de Hendersonville, True Ridge y el Centro de Hendersonville participaron en talleres mensuales con el equipo de Construyendo Comunidades Integradas para redactar el plan.

In Spring 2026, the Curriculum in Latin American and Caribbean Studies and the Building Integrated Communities (BIC) initiative offered for the first time a Language Access Planning for Emergencies and Disasters Course. The course brought together UNC students with local government emergency and disaster management teams from 16 urban and rural jurisdictions across the state.
