The Team Wall 💪⚓️

At lab last week, UNC NROTC took on the 20-foot Team Wall, an obstacle that requires every member of the battalion to make it over.

The wall is more than a physical challenge. It tests our ability to communicate, lead, trust one another, and work toward a shared goal. This exercise requires planning and problem-solving, and the ability to adapt and execute together. Throughout the challenge, the 4/C Midshipmen step into different leadership roles, learning when to take charge, when to listen, and how to use the strengths of the people around them.

Congratulations to the 4/C for their completion of New Student Orientation last week!

NSO is a process in which the fourth class are onboarded into the Battalion, and given an introduction to life at UNC. They become familiar with unit standards and what it is like to push themselves mentally, morally, and physically.

Throughout the week, they are given standards briefs, they begin their work on PQS
qualification, and get closer as a class. The week concludes with a training day at Camp Butner where all of the 4/C ruck 4 miles, complete the O-course, and do Leadership Reaction Courses (LRCs). This training is designed to test physical endurance, mental resilience, and foster teamwork amona the future leaders of the BN.

Great job 4/C! We are excited to see what you accomplish in the Battalion! ⚓️🐏

Happy first week of classes from the UNC NROTC Battalion! 📚📝⚓️

On the First Day of Class, the Battalion held a run PT ending at the Old Well. It is a campus tradition where students line up on the first day of classes to drink from the Well for good luck and a 4.0 GPA.

📍Fleet Week New York

This summer, MIDN 1/C Rodriguez embarked aboard USS Kearsarge (LHD-3) during Fleet Week New York.

Fleet Week is an annual celebration that connects the public with the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard through ship tours, community events, and demonstrations. This year’s Fleet Week partnered with Sail250. It was the largest international maritime and naval gathering in U.S. history, celebrating America’s 250th birthday in 2026.

While in New York, USS Kearsarge hosted admirals from every NATO nation. The piers featured over 70 allied vessels and 30 international tall ships. Slide 4, is MIDN Rodriguez with the Australian Chief of Navy.

Ashore, Midshipmen explored some of the city’s most iconic museums, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History. Meeting visitors from around the world, taking photos with international tourists, and enjoying New York pizza made the trip especially memorable.

Experiences like Fleet Week provide Midshipmen with unique opportunities to engage with allies, connect with the public, and gain firsthand exposure to the Navy’s mission.

Summer Cruise Check-In!

MIDN 3/C Kyler and Emehel are currently on CORTRAMID. This is a 3/C cruise that shows Midshipmen a look into each community.

Their first week, they embarked on Marine Week at Camp Lejeune. They experienced regular PT, MOS mixers with Junior Officers, a range day, and an overall introduction to the USMC.

Their second week was Surface Warfare week out of Norfolk, VA. They experienced ship tour opportunities, simulation exercises, weapons training, and an underway!

Along with all the training and experience they were also able to explore Virginia Beach and Camp Lejeune. Such a cool opportunity to experience every aspect of each community and meet experienced officers and sailors.

Happy Summer Cruise Sunday! ⚓️🌺

MIDN 2/C Maynard recently returned from a Phase 0 Surface Cruise in Hawaii with DDG-108 Wayne E Meyer while they were assisting the Royal Australian Navy helicopter crew get qualified for DDG landings for the upcoming RIMPAC exercise.

MIDN Maynard took the opportunity to participate in several training events. He participated in VBSS (tactical boarding, search, & seizure) shooting the .50 Cal Browning M2; exploring the engineering spaces; and working with the deck division. He also had the opportunity to watch a neighboring ship’s change of command ceremony.

He also explored around Hawaii in his free time. From hiking Diamond Head park, an old military base from WW2, to trying local cuisines, and exploring the beautiful beaches, he was able to get the Hawaii experience while training.

One of MIDN Maynard’s favorite parts of his cruise was a ship event where all the ship’s officers (including the CO and XO) served ice cream to the crew.

Summer Cruise is a great opportunity for Midshipmen to travel and explore while getting leadership training and experience.

Happy Summer Cruise Sunday! ☀️✈️⚓️

MIDN 1/C Guerra has just wrapped up his Aviation Cruise in San Diego, CA!

He spent 3 weeks with HSC-4 Black Knights, an MH-60S Squadron based out of Naval Air Station North Island on Coronado, California. Over the course of the cruise he shadowed the JO pilots and got a feel for the life of an aviation officer both inside and outside the cockpit.
He was able to fly on the controls for a few hours, have numerous trips in the back seat, help with a fly over for an MLS game, and get hoisted by the aircraft to simulate search and rescue operations.

This was an amazing opportunity for MIDN Guerra to get hands on experience in aviation and leadership development. Fly Navy!
