Town of Chapel Hill

Town of Chapel Hill This is the official page for the Town of Chapel Hill, NC. We are 140 miles east of Charlotte, and 25 minutes north of Raleigh, our capital.

Sometimes described by its booster as “the pat of butter in a sea of grits,” Chapel Hill (and its adjunct community, Carrboro) lies on a belt of high and wooded ground two and a half hours from the Atlantic Ocean and three east of the Appalachian range. But Chapel Hill’s citizens understand that what makes our town so agreeable is not that it lies in the gravitational field of other destinations,

but that it is politely and resolutely a distinct place with an array of magnetisms (often counterpoised) entirely its own.

We’re moving ahead with plans to build a new Fire Station 4 and make space for an affordable housing development at the intersection of Weaver Dairy Road Ext. and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

“These important projects will help us carry out both our Complete Community strategy and our community safety goals,” said Town Manager Ted Voorhees. “This includes modernizing our facilities and building affordable housing, especially on Town-owned land and along our planned NS RAPID route. I’m thrilled to see these important bond-funded projects come to life.”

Rain, rain come our way! Stay around a few more days! 🌧️

It sure is good to see rain, but we're not in the clear yet. Our area is still experiencing drought, and we all should continue to conserve water where we can, like turning off the faucet when washing dishes or brushing our teeth.

Small actions have big impacts. Learn how you can be a water hero: owasa.org/2026drought.

Please slow down and give yourself extra time to get where you’re going as storms move through. Never drive or walk through water.

A broad region of showers and some thunderstorms with moderate to locally heavy rain continues to spread east across the Piedmont. This will result in difficult traveling conditions for the morning commute, especially across the Triangle.

Through mid morning, the greatest risk of heavy rain and flooding is along the I-85 corridor from Burlington east/northeast to Henderson. In these locations an additional 1 to 3 inches of rain may result in localized flooding.

There is a chance of severe weather later today and into tonight.
